We love 1st generation Camaros! We love everything about them…..except the audio system. So you can imagine when a customer came to us with a beautiful 1968 Camaro SS wanting to upgrade the sound system, we were thrilled at the prospect. Their goals were to dramatically improve the quality of the sound, give them concert level output, and allow them to integrate their Smartphone and iPod while keeping the dash looking stock. We were up to the challenge. We scoped out their vehicle with them, and designed a stereo system to fit their needs.
Key To This 1968 Camaro Audio Upgrade? It’s a Secret!
The system revolves around a Custom Autosound Secret Audio system that uses a hideaway brain and a wireless remote control. This means you have nothing that needs to be mounted in the dash keeping the stock radio there in all it’s glory. This system gave them AM/FM, iPod control, and an auxiliary input for portable electronics and Smartphones.
JL Audio 5 Channel Amp Provides The “Horse Power”
From there we ran signal to the trunk to a JL Audio XD700/5 amplifier which will drive all the speakers and the subwoofer. We made a simple custom trim plate up against the back seat that dramatically improved the cosmetics of the trunk while giving us a good location to mount the amplifier.
Speakers in the Kicks
For sound up front we did not want to cut up the doors so we took some Custom Autosound kick panels and modified them heavily to house German Maestro CC6508 speakers. They are a very detailed, crisp speaker that makes you want to stick around and listen to your music for hours and hours. We covered the kick panels in a tweed that matched her custom interior.
JL Audio Speakers and Subs Round Out this Classic Camaro
In the rear deck we installed JL Audio C2-690TX speakers so if you were lucky enough to get a ride in the back seat of this beauty you would have some tunes as well. The customer opted for a simple enclosure that sat in the trunk and housed a JL Audio 10W3 subwoofer to give them incredible low end impact. This was done in order to fit the budget. Future upgrade options allow for a custom, fiberglass enclosure tucked into the driver’s side corner of the trunk.
The customer left with a vehicle that now sounded as good as it looked, all the while being able to play their modern electronics in their beautiful, classic 1968 Camaro. We love it when a plan comes together.
