A client from Baltimore contacted the Westminster Speed and Sound team to inquire about a stereo system upgrade for his 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo. He was interested in improving the sound quality with an amplifier, new speakers, and a subwoofer, and he wanted a technology upgrade as well.
Porsche 911 Stereo System Speakers
The first step was to remove the factory speakers from the doors and dash. Next, our team created custom expanded PVC mounting adapters for a set of Helix i3 Series 5.25-inch woofers and matching 4-inch coaxial speakers. The woofers are mounted in the stock door locations, and the coaxials are installed in the dash plates. We blocked off the tweeter locations to maximize the performance of the 4-inch speakers.
Custom Subwoofer Upgrade
A key component in bringing this stereo system to life was adding a subwoofer. Our fabrication team created a down-firing subwoofer enclosure that fits into the back of the cabin. We installed a single Helix 10-inch shallow-mount subwoofer in the enclosure, then crafted a trim panel using OE-grade Graphite Gray carpet to ensure everything looks like it belongs. The subwoofer is mounted securely to the vehicle using stock fastener locations, and it can be removed without leaving any trace of modifications to the vehicle.
Porsche Amp Upgrade
The new sound system is powered by a six-channel Match UP 6DSP amplifier. We mounted the amp in place of the stock unit and ran dedicated power cabling to the battery to ensure reliable performance. This amp produces 65 watts of power for the door woofers and dash coaxial speakers. The subwoofer receives 320 watts from the remaining pair of high-power channels.
Sony Mobile ES Radio
We replaced the stock radio with a Sony Mobile ES XAV-9000ES multimedia receiver. A new dash kit and wire harness adapter were used to ensure the radio looked great and performed reliably. We also added a USB-C extension in place of the stock power port beside the radio so the client could charge a phone while driving. We added a backup camera above the rear license plate to make parking and maneuvering easier and safer.
Baltimore’s Porsche Audio Experts
We finished the installation by tuning the DSP in the Match amplifier to deliver realistic imaging and staging, along with a natural but enjoyable frequency response curve.
A few days later, the client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound to pick up the vehicle and immediately hopped in for a listen. He was thrilled with the sound and loved the clean, tidy installation. If the audio system in your Porsche doesn’t put a smile on your face, drop by our store or give us a call. We’d be happy to design a sound system upgrade that brings your music to life!
