A repeat client from Westminster, Maryland, came to Westminster Speed & Sound with his beautiful 2010 Chevy Camaro SS, looking to upgrade the audio system in his vehicle. We have worked on many of the client’s vehicles in the past, so it was only natural that this one would receive an upgrade. While he was here to talk about the audio system, he spotted our K40 custom-installed laser and radar detector display and started asking questions. Within a matter of minutes, he decided that the stereo system would be temporarily put on hold and the first priority was the radar system.
We went out to the vehicle with the client to look over placement options for the sensors and talk about the upgrade opportunities for the K40. It didn’t take him long to realize that he wanted the best system we had, so we scheduled an installation appointment for him.
Mounting Options
We chose the K40 RL360i system for its combination of both a front and rear radar receiver. It gives the driver more accurate readings of where a radar threat is coming from, allowing him to make more calculated decisions. In the front of the vehicle, we mounted the radar receiver securely behind the front grille for a completely stealth look. In the rear of the vehicle, we hid the radar receiver up inside the bumper, again for a stealth look.
When it is time to mount laser defusers, placement becomes critical because they need a direct shot of the road ahead or behind your vehicle. In the front of the Camaro, we installed two G5 defusers strategically placed inside the lower grille, about 12” outside the front license plate. This allowed us to keep the stealth look intact while not compromising the performance of the defusers. In the rear of the vehicle, we installed a single G5 laser defuser in the license plate mount, right near the tag.
Laser Diffusion
One of the greatest advantages of a K40 custom-installed system is the ability to have laser defusers, not just sensors. You see, laser only covers about a 3’ wide path at 300 yards and is shot at one vehicle at a time. A laser sensor can’t pick up someone in front of you being shot, so your detector only goes off if you are the target. Unfortunately, it is too late to avoid a ticket at that point.
Laser defusers take protection to the next level. When they sense the presence of laser, they immediately fire back powerful beams of light that the laser gun doesn’t understand so it can’t get a reading on you, giving you precious time to slow down and avoid a ticket.
K Band Elimination
The radar receivers in the RL360i will also filter out the K Band radar used by modern vehicles with distance-based cruise control. Most radar detectors will false a lot on heavily traveled roads as more and more vehicles come with this feature. K40 has found a way to filter out the specific frequency of cruise-based radar while still allowing it to detect speed-based radar guns. This is another reason why K40 is leading the pack in custom-installed laser and radar detectors.
Visible And Audible Alerts
Inside the vehicle, we mounted the LED display indicators on the left and right sides of the steering column shroud. When they are not illuminating, you don’t even know they exist, but when a threat from the front occurs, the left LED flashes. In the event of a rear threat, the right LED flashes. We also installed a hidden speaker that gives the driver audible alerts of any threat. An RF-based wireless remote control sits conveniently in the center console and controls all of the optional settings on the unit.
Professional Installations
In usual Westminster Speed fashion, we soldered all of our connections with heat-shrink, and loomed and neatly routed all of the wiring, allowing for easy servicing in the future.
Camaro SS K40 Radar Satisfaction
When the client came to pick up his vehicle, he was thrilled with the installation. He loved how it blended in with the vehicle, making it almost nonexistent to the naked eye.
