A client from Frederick contacted Westminster Speed and Sound about the stereo system on his beautiful 2016 Harley-Davidson Road Glide. In simple terms, he had a “professional” work on his bike, and in the end, it barely played and it sounded horrible. The sad reality is that we see this more and more with Harley motorcycles. The good news is that we can fix it and get the bike back in proper working order.
The First Step Is an Evaluation
The first step in a stereo rescue is to survey the situation. Our team disassembled the bike so we could see what was going on. As you can see in the pictures, the previous “installer” had cut out sections of the inner fairing and ended up leaving the amp just floating around. All of the connections were poor, the wiring was messy, and the system was not even wired to play in stereo! After some digging, we realized that all but one piece of equipment was salvageable.
We Can Make It Better than Before
The second step in this process is to completely gut all the old wiring and make this bike right. As we dove into the project, we realized that one of the rear speakers had been damaged. Our technician was able to repair the damage and get it back to playing properly. When we do our wiring, every connection is soldered, and protective heat shrink is applied. Everything is neatly loomed and secured to allow for easy servicing in the future. As you can see in the final pictures, all of that was accomplished. And of course, we got the system playing in stereo again.
Additional Speakers Added in the Lowers
While we had the bike, our client asked us to install a third set of speakers in the lowers. Whenever we add speakers in this location, we completely hide the wiring inside the crash bar and install quick-release terminals as needed.
Can You Get the Radio Playing?
The last request was to see if we could get the radio playing on this Road Glide. This was a matter of using the proper antenna adapter and fixing the hidden antenna that a previous installer had broken while attempting the installation.
Save Yourself Some Money in the Long Run
When we were finished and the client came to pick up his bike, he grinned from ear to ear when we cranked it up for the first time. And then he said, “If I would have known about you guys, I could have saved a lot of money getting it done right the first time.” And that is the moral to our post today.
