A repeat client from Boonsboro, Maryland, came to WSS Westminster Speed & Sound to upgrade his beautiful 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo radar detector and laser shifter system. He was interested in doing multiple upgrades to the vehicle, but wanted to start with a custom-installed laser and radar defense system. We had installed a custom detector in his previous vehicle, so we knew he wanted top of the line equipment. This particular vehicle already had a radar detector in it, but to say it was poorly thought out and installed was an understatement. It was decided early on in our consultation about the vehicle that it was going to be removed.
Initial Client Consultation Gets Everyone On The Same Page
We spent significant time on going over the installation, as this vehicle had the top-of-the-line leather upgrade package and red leather was everywhere. The client did not want to disturb any of that beautiful red leather, and we didn’t blame him. At the end of our consultation, we worked up a proposal for the client and he liked it, so we scheduled an installation appointment.
First Step of this 911 Turbo Radar Install Was To Remove The Previous Radar System
For this vehicle, we chose the Escort 9500ci laser and radar system with front laser shifters. Once we had the vehicle in our shop, the first thing we did was remove the existing system from the vehicle. It is truly sad to see such a bad installation in such an incredible performance car. Fortunately, nothing was irreversible. Once we repaired a few items, we were good to go with our installation.
Front Radar Receiver Securely Mounted
We removed the front bumper on the vehicle to allow our technician to mount the radar receiver securely to the metal bumper structure attached to the front end. The time to properly mount and position sensors is where many shops cut corners, but for us, taking that time is the only way to do an install. Choosing to have a system of this caliber installed on your vehicle is a sizable investment, so don’t you want to make sure you are getting all the performance possible out of the system?
Front Laser Shifter Installation
We placed two laser shifters strategically in the front bumper with an unobstructed view of the road ahead. The Escort 9500ci system goes beyond laser receiving. It does what is called laser shifting: When the laser sensors see that they have been shot with laser radar, they immediate fire back beams of light that don’t let the laser operator get a reading on your vehicle. You now have time to slow down and avoid a ticket. If you have a system that only does laser detection, the only thing your system is going to do is alert you to the fact that you are about to get a ticket.
Since laser shifters have to work perfectly to be effective, their placement is critical. Again, this is where Westminster Speed & Sound is different. We spend as much time as needed to properly place and securely mount the laser shifters to the vehicle. A poor installation means poor performance, and that won’t do for us.
Interior Locations Chosen For Security And Convenience
When it was time to move inside the vehicle, we were very careful in choosing our placements for everything. We mounted the speaker that gives audible alerts securely and hid it underneath the driver’s side dash without disturbing any of that beautiful red leather. We chose not to install the LED, as the combination of the display and the speaker would give the client plenty of notification of a threat. This also meant we didn’t have to drill a hole in the dash, which is a good thing. We hid the controller inside the small storage pocket in the center console, and designed it so the cover could be closed, completely covering it from view.
We mounted the display in the pocket under the radio in a slightly concealed spot. The average person will never know the display is there, but the client can easily see the display by slightly lowering his head. This accomplished two things: First, we made no modifications to the dash, and second, the vehicle looks completely stock to a passerby.
Our team installed a remote mounted master on/off switch in a convenient location, in the event the system ever has to be turned off while the client is driving. We set up the 9500ci system to turn on and off with the ignition, but, in rare instances, you may want it off completely. In case you are wondering, the placement of the controller would not give the client the capability to access the power button on the side when installed in its chosen location.
