A client from Baltimore recently contacted Westminster Speed and Sound to inquire about upgrading the stereo system on his 2020 Road Glide motorcycle. As with most Harley owners, he wasn’t happy with how loudly the stock system would play. After letting him audition the demo bike in our showroom and getting his feedback on what he liked about it, we designed a simple upgrade that would deliver the performance he wanted.
ARC Audio Motorcycle Audio Upgrades
The heart of the new sound system for this Road Glide was an ARC Audio MOTO720 four-channel amplifier. This amplifier can produce 150 watts of power per channel to ensure that whatever music is playing is reproduced with exceptional clarity. What’s crucial to its use on a motorcycle is that this amp is one of the most efficient on the market and can convert more than 90% of the charging system energy into power for the speakers. Competing amps are often in the 60% to mid-70% range and waste power as heat. The amplifier is mounted inside the front fairing to help protect it from the elements.
Next, we removed the stock speakers and replaced them with a set of ARC Audio MOTO602 6.5-inch speakers. These speakers are designed specifically for powersports applications and feature both UV- and water-resistant designs. They can also play much louder and handle more power, so the client will be able to drown out wind and exhaust system noise.
2020 Road Glide Saddlebag Speaker Upgrade
The final step in upgrading the audio system on this Road Glide was to install the Rockford Fosgate TMS69BL14 saddlebag lid speaker kit. This system integrates a speaker mounting bracket and grille into the stock fiberglass lid cover. It allows us to mount the included TMS69 powersports speakers without having to send the lids for paint. Not only do these speakers sound great, but we can also install them in a few hours and get the client back on the road quickly.
We finished the project by reflashing the Boom!Box radio with our programmer to remove the factory equalization curve from the output so the new system would sound better and play louder.
