A client from Manchester recently contacted the team at Westminster Speed and Sound to inquire about upgrading his 2019 Toyota Tacoma with a new audio system. He not only wanted much better sound quality from the stereo, but he also wanted a source unit that included Android Auto. After inspecting the truck and evaluating installation options for the equipment he already owned, we put together an upgrade package that would meet his expectations.
Toyota Speaker Upgrade
We started the project by treating the doors with a layer of Hushmat sound deadening material before setting to work creating mounting adapters for the new speakers. The client already had a set of JL Audio ZR650-CSi 6.5-inch component speakers from a previous installation. Our team made brackets to mount the round woofers in the 6×9 speaker locations in the doors and a second set of adapters to locate the tweeters in the dash midrange locations.
JL Audio Stealthbox Subwoofer Enclosure
To provide a solid foundation for the audio system, the client chose a JL Audio Stealthbox subwoofer enclosure for the truck. The SB-T-TACDCG3/10TW3 subwoofer system is designed specifically for 2016 and newer Tacoma Double Cab trucks and includes a single 10-inch 10TW3-D4 subwoofer.
The system is powered by a three-channel JL Audio XD500/3v2 amplifier that provides up to 75 watts to each of the front speakers and 300 watts to the subwoofer. We added a remote bass knob to the dash, just beside the USB port.
Alpine Radio Adds Apple CarPlay Connectivity
We removed the factory CD player to make way for an Alpine iLX-F309 multimedia receiver. This radio features a DIN-sized chassis that fits into the dash and a massive 9-inch touch screen that mounts to the face of the chassis. We adjusted the display so that it followed the angle of the radio trim for a factory-installed look. We used an adapter to connect the steering wheel radio controls, the factory USB port in the center console and the OEM backup camera to the new radio.
3M Crystalline Heat-Rejecting Window Tint
The last step in upgrading this client’s truck was to tint the windows with 3M Crystalline film. We installed this heat-rejecting tint film on all the windows to help keep the interior of the vehicle cool and comfortable on hot days.
Toyota Tacoma Audio and Tint Upgrade
With the new audio system and window tint installed in this Tacoma, we called the client to let him know he could pick up the truck. He was thrilled with the sound of the stereo and loved the tint.
