A local client dropped into Westminster Speed and Sound to find out how we could improve the performance of the audio system in his 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. We showed the client a few speaker and subwoofer options on our displays, then offered to let him connect his smartphone to a Sony multimedia receiver to experience its CarPlay and Android Auto integration features. The client loved the radio and gave us the go-ahead to design an upgrade that would sound amazing, even with the roof folded down.
Jeep Wrangler Speakers Deliver Clear Sound
We started by taking apart the lower section of the dash to remove the factory speaker enclosures. Once we had them out of the vehicle, we upgraded the speakers with a set of BLAM 165 RS component speakers. The woofers from the set are bolted securely into the lower enclosures. The tweeters went into the factory midrange locations up on the dash.
We upgraded the overhead speakers in the soundbar with a set of BLAM 165RC 6.5-inch coaxials. These two-way drivers fit nicely in place of the factory-installed woofers.
Sony Technology Upgrade
The next step was to replace the stock radio with a Sony XAV-AX7000 multimedia receiver. Aside from the crystal-clear 6.95-inch touchscreen display and the clean, bezel-less design, this radio includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. These technologies allow the client to use the voice recognition technology in his smartphone to make phone calls, get navigation directions and choose the music he wants to listen to without having to take his eyes off the road. The radio also includes a high-power amplifier rated at a real 50 watts per channel. This two-and-half times as much as most conventional radios. We connected the amp to the front and rear speakers, then set the crossovers in the deck to limit the bass going to the speakers so they’ll play loudly.
JL Audio Subwoofer System for Jeeps
The next step was to install a pair of JL Audio Stealthbox subwoofer enclosures in the back of the Jeep. JL constructs the SB-J-WRUP/10TW1-2 and SB-J-WRUD/10TW1-2 out of fiberglass, so they fit perfectly between the rear tire wells and the back seat. Each enclosure is home to a 10TW1 10-inch subwoofer.
We mounted a Helix M One amplifier in the storage area in the rear of the Jeep. This mono amplifier can produce as much as 600 watts of power to the pair of subwoofers.
