Backup cameras have become a very popular category for us at WSS Westminster Speed & Sound. We have been in this category for over a decade. We have found that, while our client’s know they want a backup camera, they are usually unfamiliar with all the solutions that are available. Follow along with us and we will explore the top solutions.
Backup Camera Screens
The primary focus for many people is the screen that is going to display the image they are going to see. These break down into four primary types;
- Rearview mirrors with integrated LCD monitors – This style is just as it sounds. We replace the existing rearview mirror with a new mirror that has an LCD monitor embedded into it. The monitors are typically 3.5”-4.5” in size. This is one of our most popular styles of monitors as it is invisible except when the vehicle is in reverse.
- Replacement in-dash radios with LCD screens – Many people find out that they can have the convenience of an in dash touchscreen monitor like a lot of new vehicles come equipped with and they choose that option. The most popular screen sizes are 6”-7” in diameter. This option will many times give people other popular options as well like Bluetooth for hands free cell phone use and music streaming, and integration of their smartphone or iPod, SiriusXM, Pandora Radio, and on and on.
- Stand alone LCD monitors – This is an option if a person does not have a vehicle where the rearview mirror can be replaced or they want to replace the factory in-dash radio. The screen sizes on these typically start at 3.5” and go up to 7” in diameter. Placement of the screens is chosen during the consultation process with one of our sales advisors.
- Integrating with factory installed LCD screens – More and more modern vehicles are coming with factory installed LCD screens and for many of them we can add a backup camera to work with that screen. An example of one of our solutions works extremely well with the 2012 and newer Toyota Camry.
Choosing which option makes the most sense is very dependent upon the vehicle and the needs of the driver.
The Backup Camera
Next up would be the camera itself. We have tried to make this decision as simple as possible for our customers. Our most popular solution is the license plate mounted cameras. We offer a design where the bracket goes behind the license plate for a much cleaner look. The bracket then loops over the top of the tag in the middle and holds a small, ¾” square camera that has an adjustable angle. We look for cameras that work well in low light situations and give you a wide angle of view. We also sell cameras that can be installed into panels on the vehicle, and cameras that are commercial grade for heavy duty vehicles.
But there is one more thing we do for you on these products. To put it simply, the majority of consumer grade backup cameras and LCD monitors do not meet the quality standards of WSS Westminster Speed & Sound. We have weeded through all the good and the bad and have chosen what we feel are the most reliable, best valued products available. We absolutely hate doing warranty work on vehicles. So we employ professional technicians and use the best installation methods, along with higher quality products, to ensure years of use for our customers.
We would be glad to get together with you for a consultation and help you find the best solution for a backup camera system that fits your individual needs. Stop in, call or Contact Us for more information!
