A client from Finksburg contacted us at Westminster Speed and Sound, looking to add a backup camera to his wife’s 2014 Mercedes SLK230. We scheduled a consultation at our facility so we could look over the car with him. When he arrived, we noticed it had the color screen in the dash, so we looked for a solution that would use it to display the backup camera image. We discussed different options for the camera itself with the client, who chose one that would look like a factory installation. The client liked our proposal, so we set a time to begin work on the Mercedes.
On the day of the installation, we took the SLK230 through our detailed check-in procedure to ensure everything was in working order. We installed protection gear on both seats, the floor areas and the steering wheel.
Once the integration module was installed up front to allow the backup camera image to be displayed, it was time to work on the camera installation itself. Since this is a hard-top convertible, routing the camera cable is much more difficult because you have to take into account the folding top mechanism. Our team follows factory wiring locations and securely looms the wiring using the same methods as Mercedes does when building the vehicle.
For the camera, we used a high-quality lip-mount design and fabricated a composite spacer to place it in the optimum location. As you can see in the final pictures, the system looks like it came as a factory-installed option.
