Backup Sensors are one of the greatest safety inventions for modern vehicles. WSS Westminster Speed & Sound has been actively selling and installing this technology for over a decade. Backup sensors are a great alternative to installing a backup camera. Let’s explore why your vehicle can benefit from backup sensors.
What Are Backup Sensors
Backup Sensors are small devices, approximately the size of a quarter, that get flush mounted into your bumper. They come in a gloss black finish, and we have the capability to custom paint them to match your bumpers if you so desire. These sensors emit ultrasonic waves that reflect off objects. They take the waves that they get back and process them to determine if something is in front of you or behind you.
There are MANY grades of sensors in this category. We have spent a lot of time researching this category and have partnered with what we feel are hands down the best sensors on the market. Their quality and performance are top of the line.
How Do Backup Sensors Work?
When you put the vehicle into reverse, you will get one single beep. That tells you that you have backup sensors and they are now active. When you get approximately 6-7′ away from an object, the system will audibly beep at a slow pace. When you get 2-3′ away from the object it goes to a fast beep. At approximately 1-1.5′ away it goes to a constant beep.
Why We Love Backup Sensors
You are looking behind you, like you should, as you are backing up. If you are relying on a backup camera, you have to look forward, at the screen. That is sort of counter intuitive. Plus, these sensors are extremely accurate. If there is something behind you, you are going to get an alert. You are not going to “miss” that object that was in your rearview camera at night when you can not see things as clearly.
Many people who hear this explanation in our store will now ask us “should I skip the backup camera”? It is not a simple answer, but I will tell you this: If I could only have one, I would almost always take backup sensors. What I really like is to use them both, and this solution is getting more and more popular.
Front-Facing Sensors
We also have systems designed for the front of vehicles. If you parallel park your vehicle a lot or have trouble visualizing the front corner of your bumper, a front sensor kit may be for you.
