A client from Baltimore recently contacted Westminster Speed and Sound to discuss options for upgrading his 2006 Porsche 911 audio system. The factory radio and speakers had suffered water damage and had to be replaced. He also wanted something that would still sound great when he had the roof folded down. After inspecting the vehicle and auditioning several products in our showroom, we designed a simple yet elegant upgrade that would give him the sound he wanted and a new source unit with modern smartphone connectivity features.
Alpine Multimedia Receiver with Navigation
The client chose an Alpine INE-W977HD double-DIN multimedia receiver to serve as the foundation for his new sound system. The 977HD includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone navigation connectivity. These technologies allow you to make phone calls, dictate text messages or choose the music you want using the voice recognition technology built into Apple and Android-based smartphones. The INE-W977HD also includes an HD radio tuner, and we added a SiriusXM SXV300 satellite radio receiver to enhance his listening options.
Audiofrog Speaker System Upgrade
Perhaps the most important components of any sound system are the speakers you choose. The client wanted something that would sound amazing while able to handle enough power to remain audible and clear when the roof was down. We installed a set of Audiofrog GS60 woofers and GS10OE tweeters in the factory locations in the doors. A set of Audiofrog GS610C passive crossover networks divides the audio signal from the amplifier between the speakers.
ARC Audio Mini Amplifier
We installed an ARC Audio KS125.2 BX2 two-channel amplifier in the storage compartment in the front of the vehicle to ensure the speakers had enough power when the volume was turned up. This amp can produce an impressive 70 watts of power per channel in a compact 4.8- by 8.25-inch footprint. The amp is concealed by a factory cover to give the cargo area a clean and tidy look.
Last Steps for Porsche 911 Audio Upgrade Project
With the equipment installed, the last step was to fine-tune the sensitivity controls on the amplifier and the tweeter adjustment on the passive crossover network to provide smooth and natural frequency response that sounds great at all volume levels. The client was thoroughly impressed with the performance of his new Porsche 911 audio system and loved having the convenience of a modern smartphone interface to make it safer to communicate while driving.
