A client from Baltimore came to Westminster Speed & Sound for a Porsche Carrera 4s 996 technology boost for his 2004 model Cabriolet. If you are into 911s, then you know this car is special. While the client loved his car, he wanted to update its technology to be more in line with a new model. Our team looked over the car with the client and listened as he explained his goals for the upgrades. We gave him our perspectives, gained from working on many of these models, and showed him products that we felt best suited his needs. He liked our ideas, so we scheduled an installation date for him.
Pioneer Radio Is Loaded With Technology
The core of this upgrade was going to be a Pioneer AVIC5100NEX in-dash navigation unit. It combines full-featured turn-by-turn voice guided navigation, along with Bluetooth for music streaming and hands-free phone calls. The client also gained Apple CarPlay software – if anyone driving the vehicle owns an iPhone, they automatically get to use this exciting technology. We flushed a USB port into a convenient location, allowing him to play his digital media files or iPod, or just charge his phone.
Our Porsche-Savvy Technicians Installed Pioneer Unit Perfectly
If you had seen one of these vehicles when they came from Porsche, they typically had a single DIN radio in the dash that is 2” tall. Directly underneath the radio is the heater control system. We moved the heater controls to the center console and added a Porsche factory pocket directly above it. Then we used a trim ring specially designed for the 996 series Porsche models to mount the navigation system in the dash. As you can see from the pictures, the final product looks factory-installed. In the usual fashion for Westminster Speed & Sound, we hid the GPS antenna in a location that gives it unhindered access to the sky, keeping with the factory-looking theme.
Backup Camera For Enhanced Safety
911s are also famous for blind spots from the rear of the vehicle. For this reason, we added a backup camera that is mounted at the top of the rear license plate and uses the plate bolts to hold it in position, eliminating the need to drill mounting holes. The client can now safely see behind him, making for a more confident driver.
Custom Audio Integration
This particular Porsche had the Bose system and used fiber optic connections at the factory amp. We were able to reconfigure the audio system to be powered off the Pioneer unit and added a small amp to power the factory subwoofer.
Client Loved His Porsche Carrera 4s 996 Technology Boost
When the client came to pick up his vehicle, he loved the fit and finish of the installation, and all of the upgraded technology.
