A repeat client from Taneytown came to Westminster Speed and Sound looking to add a custom radar and laser system to his 2017 BMW 440xi. Our team installed a unit in his F-150, so it was only natural that he would want proper protection in his car. After looking over the vehicle and spending time with the client, we determined that a K40 system made the most sense for this BMW. We worked up a proposal that he approved, so we set a time to begin work on the vehicle.
Custom Radar and Laser System is the Ultimate in Protection
Here at WSS, we sell both portable and custom-installed systems. While portable systems have their place, far and away, the ultimate in protection is achieved with a custom installed laser and radar detector. Our K40 systems give the client options for a front, or front and rear, radar receiver.
Since these are not constrained by the size requirements of a portable unit, they have incredibly strong antennas that can pick up radar signals from extremely long distances. When it comes to laser protection, a custom-installed unit makes sense. You see, laser-based radar, or LIDAR, uses a direct beam of light to measure speed. If someone in front of you is shot with a laser gun, your detector never goes off. When the gun is aimed at your vehicle, all your portable detector can do is alert you to the fact that you are about to get a ticket.
Custom-installed K40 units, on the other hand, use laser defusers. When they sense laser being shot at the vehicle, they immediately fire back powerful beams of light so the laser gun can’t get a reading on your speed. You now have time to reduce your speed and avoid a ticket.
BMW 440xi Custom Radar Installation
For this 440xi, the client chose the K40 RL200i system, which comes with a front radar receiver. As you can see in the pictures, we mounted the radar receiver to the metal substructure of the BMW. Many shops simply use double-sided tape to mount a receiver. The reality is that the only way to maximize the performance and reliability of radar detection is by having it securely mounted in the vehicle. We hid the unit behind the front grille in a completely stealth mounting location.
Two G5 Laser Defusers Round out the Protection
For laser protection, our technicians securely mounted two G5 laser defusers. We placed each unit strategically in a spot where it would be the least visible, yet offer the maximum protection. When the laser gun is anywhere from 800–1,200 feet away, the laser beam width is less than 36” wide. What that means to you is simple: Placement of the defusers is critical. They have to be parallel to the road and aimed precisely ahead to work properly.
Exclusive K40 Certified Dealer in Mid-Atlantic
Westminster Speed and Sound is pleased to be the only K40 Certified installation facility in the Mid-Atlantic. Our installers have undergone extensive, multi-day training at a dedicated facility geared completely to reference-standard installation methods. We came away from that training armed with cutting-edge knowledge on how to install a system for the ultimate in protection for our clients. When you couple this certified training with our high installation standards already in practice, the end result is a system that performs better and lasts longer.
Interior Alerts
Inside the vehicle, we flush-mounted the indicator in the center of the steering column shroud, aiming up. While driving, the driver can easily see the light as well as the blue glowing effect at the top of the instrument cluster. Coupled with the indicator is a hidden speaker that announces audible alerts. Any changes that have to be made to the system are handled by an RF based remote control that is easily stored in the center console.
Delivering the Vehicle to the Client
Once our team was done with the installation, had verified everything was working properly and performed our extensive vehicle checkout procedure, it was time to deliver the BMW to the client. When he came to pick up his 440xi, he was thrilled with the quality workmanship. Under most circumstances, we would spend extensive time inside the vehicle, going over operation of the upgrades so the driver could become familiar with how it worked, but this client already owned the same system in another vehicle. Once the tour of this vehicle was finished, we thanked him for the repeat business and sent him on his way.
