A repeat client from Owings Mills came to Westminster Speed and Sound looking to upgrade the audio system in his 2016 BMW K1600GTLE motorcycle. We had previously worked on another bike for him and he liked the sound quality improvement, so he wanted us to work our magic on this bike. After scheduling an appointment to look at the bike and assess the best course of action, we worked up a proposal that he liked, so we set a time to begin.
Audison Front Speakers Begin the Upgrades
This particular BMW came from the factory with a 4” speaker in the front fairing. After looking it over, we realized a larger speaker wasn’t going to work unless we reengineered the complete fairing, so we chose one of our best-sounding speakers: the Audison APX4. It is a 4” coax that mounts the tweeter in a point source arrangement at the base of the speaker cone, giving it the sound quality properties of a good component system in a coaxial design. We added polyfill to the inside of the speaker enclosure, as well as HushMat sound-damping material, to improve speaker performance and eliminate any resonance from the enclosure itself.
JL Audio HX280/4 Amp Supplies the BMW Motorcycle with Power
When it came time for power, we chose a JL Audio HX/280/4 amplifier. It is part of their powersports line of equipment that is designed to handle the moisture and abuse associated with life on a motorcycle. Our team installed it in the rear storage location and made a custom trim panel for it so the amp looks like a factory-installed option.
Quick Disconnects Allow for Easy Removal
Since this bike is a BMW, you can imagine that lots of engineering went into it. The rear storage assembly is designed to be removed if the rider wants a cleaner look to the bike. For this reason, we engineered a quick release system for all the amplifier wiring that is easily accessible underneath the rear seat. These connections can be accessed in a matter of seconds, making it an easy process.
BMW K1600GTLE Audio Installation Designed to Last
All of the motorcycle installations that we do at Westminster Speed and Sound are built to a higher standard, because we know the abuse they are going to take out on the open road. For this reason, we solder all our connections and apply protective tape. We neatly loom and securely fasten all wiring to allow for easy serviceability in the future. In short, we want your system to be reliable for years to come. You have enough things to worry about when riding your bike, and your stereo system shouldn’t be one of them.
