A client from Phoenix, Maryland, recently visited Westminster Speed and Sound for some help with his 1987 Porsche 911 audio system. The client purchased the vehicle as a gift for his wife and came to us because the stereo system wasn’t working properly. After inspecting the existing aftermarket audio system and having a listen to it, we proposed an upgrade solution that would provide the features and performance he wanted in this classic sports car.
Porsche 911 Audio System Upgrade
The client listened to several speaker options in our showroom before settling on the impressive Hertz Mille Pro MPK165.3 components. We installed a woofer and tweeter from the set in each door and ran wiring from each back into the vehicle and toward the area under the passenger seat.
The vehicle already had a subwoofer system. We spent some time fixing the existing enclosure to optimize its performance and reliability for the new sound system.
Porsche Radio Upgrade
We removed the existing radio from the 911 and installed a Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System in its place. This radio includes Bluetooth hands-free calling, 3-D navigation, a USB connection for a memory stick or an Apple device and an SD card slot for MP3 files. As we have a lot of Porsche clients, we keep these radios in stock here at Westminster Speed and Sound.
The radio drops right into the single-DIN opening in the dash without any modifications. Though it doesn’t have preamp outputs, the amplifiers we installed connect directly to the speaker outputs of this new radio.
Audison Prima Car Audio Amplifiers
Our team installed a pair of Audison Prima amplifiers under the passenger seat of the 911. An AP4.9 bit four-channel amplifier and a matching AP1 D subwoofer amplifier fit nicely beside each other on the floor of the car. The AP4.9 bit includes a digital signal processor that allows us to drive each of the five speakers in the vehicle directly without the need for passive crossover networks. We used our Audison bit Tune to complete the system calibration for an accurate and stable soundstage and a smooth and natural frequency response.

With the Porsche 911 audio system upgrade complete, the client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound to have a listen. He was amazed at the clarity and detail of the system and impressed with the neat and tidy installation. He knew his wife would love having great music in her new car.
