A local client stopped by Westminster Speed and Sound, looking to upgrade the technology in his 2018 Toyota Avalon. If you are familiar with the touchscreen stereos in the dash of modern Toyota vehicles, then you know that CarPlay was not an option until 2019 and Android Auto is not currently available until some of the 2020 models.
As you can imagine, this client wanted CarPlay and Android Auto, but didn’t want to lose any of his current functionality. One of our team went out to his Avalon and sat in it so we could determine how it was equipped. At that point, we let him know that we could add the functionality he wanted. After reviewing options in our interactive sound room, he chose the Alpine iLX-207 as the most-logical solution. We worked up a proposal that he liked, so we set time to begin working on his car.
To make sure the driver to lose any functionality, we integrated the steering wheel mounted audio controls into the new Alpine unit. We also kept the factory backup camera working with the new unit, along with the original USB port already installed.
As you can see in the pictures, the final product had a clean, factory look. Now, whether the client uses an iPhone or Android phone, he can safely make calls, send and receive text messages, use maps, listen to music, and much more. When you add in the voice control functionality for many of these features, it is a win-win for the driver. Simply put, this is the safest way to harness the power of a smartphone while driving.
