A client from Boswell recently contacted the Westminster Speed and Sound team to ask about upgrading the stereo system on his 2015 Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited motorcycle. Though he’s three hours away from us, he’s been impressed by the motorcycle upgrade projects we post on our website and the great reviews from our clients. After talking to the client about the changes he wanted to make, we designed a completely new sound system that includes an upgraded radio, an ultra-efficient amplifier and three speakers. The client trailered the bike to our shop, then stayed in town overnight as we completed the upgrade on this amazing touring machine.
Soundstream Reserve Harley-Davidson Radio
One of the most dramatic changes we made to the sound system was to replace the stock radio with a Soundstream Reserve HDHU.14+ digital multimedia receiver. This new radio is a direct drop-in replacement for the BoomBox radio on the bike and doesn’t require any modification to the fairing or wiring. In addition, the radio adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration along with a six-channel, 4-volt preamp output that makes adding an amplifier easy. We integrated the new radio using the option handlebar control module so the switches would control volume, source selection and track adjustment.
ARC Audio Moto Amplifier
What brings this new system to life is the four-channel ARC Audio Moto720 amplifier. This amplifier is rated to produce 150 watts of power per channel into 4-ohm loads and 180 watts into 2-ohm loads. What separates it from all the other amps on the market is its mind-boggling efficiency. This amp converts more than 90% of the energy from the charging system to power for the speakers. That’s 10 to 20% better than most popular amps. We installed the amp in the fairing and used ARC Audio’s HDFH2014 wiring harness kit to make all the connections.
Motorcycle Speakers Deliver Big Sound
The last step was to upgrade the bike with three sets of speakers. First, we installed a set of Diamond Audio MP654 6.5-inch horn-loaded coaxial drivers for the front fairing in the stock locations. Next, we added a set of Rockford Fosgate TMS65 speakers to the Tour-Pak locations on either side of the rear seat. Finally, we installed the Diamond Audio MSMP694LK saddlebag lid 6×9-inch speaker kit. This kit includes grilles and mounting brackets that work with the stock saddlebag lid. The design allows us to install new speakers without waiting for new lids to be painted, saving days in completing the project.
Baltimore’s Harley-Davidson Audio Upgrade Experts
Once we had everything installed on the bike, our technicians configured the crossover and sensitivity controls on the amp to ensure that the system would play loudly without distorting. We double-checked the radio’s functionality and made sure the handlebar controls worked as expected. The client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound to pick up the bike and was thrilled with what he saw. We helped him connect his smartphone to the radio so he could play some music he knew well. He loved the clarity of the system and how loudly it would play.
