A client from over in Hagerstown recently contacted the Westminster Speed and Sound team to ask about upgrading the stereo system on his 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide. The motorcycle had previously been upgraded with a Rockford Fosgate amplifier and three sets of their speakers. It was an improvement, but the client wanted it to play louder and sound clearer. He also wanted a way to use his iPhone while riding. So after we inspected the bike and the existing gear, we suggested a radio upgrade, new speakers and a high-performance amplifier to bring everything to life. After auditioning our demo bike to get an idea of what the upgrades would sound like, he gave us the go-ahead to schedule an installation date.
Harley-Davidson Replacement Radio
Once the bike was in our installation bay, one of our installers started removing the existing speakers and amp. The client sold it all to a friend, so it would be put to good use.
The client chose one of the Soundstream Reserve HDHU-14+ double-DIN radios to serve as the heart of the new audio system. This radio is designed specifically for 2014 and newer Harley touring bikes. It features a weather-resistant 7-inch touchscreen display and has both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Additionally, we added an interface that allows the controls on the handlebars to work with the new radio to make riding safer.
ARC Audio Amplifier Delivers Efficient Power
The next step was to install an ARC Audio Moto 720 amplifier in the front fairing. This four-channel amplifier is conservatively rated to deliver 150 watts of power to the rear speakers and 180 watts to the two sets of front speakers. ARC Audio designed this amplifier to maximize the available space in the front fairing to ensure that the amp operates efficiently.
We also installed a Rockford Fosgate DSR1 digital signal processor between the deck and the radio. The processor allows us to calibrate the signal going to each amplifier channel to produce an incredibly realistic listening experience, even at elevated volume levels.
Infinity Motorcycle Speakers Sound Amazing
The last step was to install two sets of Infinity Kappa Perfect 600X speakers in the front of the bike and upgrade the saddlebag speakers with a set of Kappa Perfect 900X speakers. The bike has a set of lower speaker enclosures on either side of the engine’s radiator along with the set in the fairing. The rear speakers include a new grille for the saddlebag lids.
Maryland’s Motorcycle Audio Upgrade Experts
Once we had everything installed and the DSR1 processor calibrated, it was time for the client to return to Westminster Speed and Sound to hear the new stereo system on his Street Glide. He was thrilled with the system’s clarity, detail and volume. We showed him how to connect his smartphone to the radio and use the voice command features to change the music that’s playing or get detailed turn-by-turn navigation directions.
