Custom Radar Detector Upgrade for Frederick Audi RS5

A client from Frederick drove over to Westminster Speed and Sound to ask about adding a premium radar detector and laser defense system to his Mythos Black 2019 Audi RS5. With 444 horsepower on tap and an almost equal amount of torque available, it takes less than five seconds for this car to break any posted speed limit in the country. The client wanted something that would protect him against speeding tickets should he leave the hammer down for a moment too long.

The rear radar receiver was mounted to the bumper structure.

The rear bumper cover was removed for the sensor installation.

The front radar receiver was mounted on top of the frame rail.

The laser defusers for the front were mounted in the grille.

Our technicians carefully aimed the laser defusers.

A rear tag frame that integrates a laser shifter was used.

After talking with the client about where and how he drives, our team showed him the K40 RL360I protection system. We proposed using three Laser Defuser Optix sensors on the front of the vehicle and a G5 sensor on the back to provide excellent coverage.

As you can see from the photos, integrating the radar antennae and laser sensors into the vehicle properly requires us to remove the front and rear bumper covers. The rear radar receiver is mounted just left of center on the back of the vehicle behind the crash reinforcement bar. We also ran the wiring for the radar receiver and the communication cable for the G5 sensor through one of the factory grommets and forward to the system control module.

On the front of the vehicle, we mounted the radar receiver on top of the bumper support, facing directly forward. The three Laser Defuser Optix sensors were mounted in the hexagonal openings of the front grille. There is a sensor spaced halfway between the Audi badge and the edges of the grille, and a third down at the bottom, just above the silver Quattro logo.

Intuitive User Interface Ensures Safe Operation

The LED indicators were mounted below the instrument cluster.

Included with the system is a wireless remote.

Unlike other detector systems that have complicated displays, the RL360I uses a pair of bright blue LEDs and a voice module to alert the driver when he needs to check his speed. We mounted the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge cluster trim panel, just above the steering column.

The system is configured and controlled using a small wireless remote. The client keeps the remote in the little storage pocket in the center console. It’s easily accessible when he wants to shut down the Laser Defusers after they provide an alert.
