A local client recently contacted Westminster Speed and Sound to inquire about upgrading the audio system’s performance in their 2015 RAM 1500. After talking to the client, they wanted a solution that would play louder and deliver a much better bass response. We designed an upgrade with new speakers, a subwoofer and compact amplifiers to breathe life into an otherwise dull sound system.
Ram 1500 Speaker Upgrade
The first step in improving the stereo in this RAM 1500 was to upgrade the speakers. After removing the factory-installed drivers, we applied a layer of sound deadening to the door skins. The deadening helps reduce noise transfer into the vehicle, making it easier to hear quiet parts in whatever music is playing.
From there, our fabrication team stepped in and created laser-cut mounting adapters for the front and rear doors and the dash. We installed a set of Helix i3 component woofers in the doors and the matching tweeters in the dash. We added a set of i3 coaxial speakers to the rear doors to wrap the sound around the listening environment.
Low Profile Subwoofer Upgrade
The next step was to install the subwoofer system. The client chose a pair of Helix IKW 10-inch subwoofers and an enclosure designed specifically for this RAM 1500 truck. The enclosure fits under the rear seat, and the drivers fire up into the seat bottoms. The SB202-210-BL enclosure has a durable weather-resistant finish, so it will last forever.
DSP Amplifiers
The client wanted the audio system to be fun to listen to while sounding lifelike. To accomplish this feat, we suggested using a pair of Match amplifiers. An UP 6 DSP powers the front and rear speakers, while an UP 1 FX powers the subwoofers. We mounted the amplifiers on a piece of expanded PVC and located them under the front seat. The PVC ensures that water and slush in the winter won’t get to the amplifiers.
The UP 6 DSP has an integrated digital signal processor, which is the key to making the stereo sound good. We set the crossovers and signal delays and then equalized the output of each speaker so it would sound lifelike and dynamic with any genre of music.

The client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound, anxious to hear the sound system upgrade. They were thrilled with the improvement.
