A client from York reached out to the Westminster Speed and Sound team after admiring some of the audio work we’ve completed on the new Ford Bronco. Like many owners of these rugged off-road SUVs, he was dissatisfied with the factory-installed stereo, particularly its lackluster bass performance. After discussing his goals, we agreed to replicate the system we had previously installed in this Bronco Raptor.
Helix Speaker Upgrade
To begin enhancing the Bronco’s audio system, we upgraded the factory speakers. The stock four-inch mids in the dash were replaced with Helix i3 coaxial speakers. These drop-in replacements deliver significantly better clarity and overall performance.
For improved midbass, we swapped out the original woofers in the kick panels with a pair of BLAM Live 6.5-inch midbass drivers. Our fabrication team created custom mounting adapters from expanded PVC plastic, allowing the new speakers to fit seamlessly using the factory fastener locations.
Bronco Subwoofer Adds Impact
The subwoofer upgrade was the centerpiece of this audio transformation. We mounted an MSC custom subwoofer enclosure to the rear tailgate and installed a Helix IK S10 10-inch shallow-mount subwoofer, complete with a grille. This compact yet powerful subwoofer handles up to 300 watts of power. The enclosure blends perfectly with the tailgate and takes up almost no cargo space, preserving the vehicle’s practicality.
Match Amplifiers for Precision and Power
To integrate the new audio system with the factory radio, we used a mObridge preamp, which sends the signal to a Helix UP8DSP eight-channel amplifier via a fiber-optic TOSLINK connection. This amplifier delivers up to 65 watts per channel to the dash, kick panel, and rear speakers.
Additionally, the integrated digital signal processor (DSP) provides two outputs, which we used to feed a Match M2.1 subwoofer amplifier. This dedicated amp delivers up to 350 watts to the subwoofer, ensuring deep, powerful bass. Both the preamp and amplifiers are securely mounted in a custom panel that aligns with the factory fastener locations.
System Calibration
The finishing touch for this audio upgrade was the meticulous calibration of the DSP. Using a microphone, we fine-tuned the output levels and equalization for each speaker, ensuring a smooth and natural tonal balance. The result is a soundstage that spans the width of the dash, making it feel like you’re seated in the audience at a live performance.
To enhance user convenience, we added a Match DSP Director remote control, allowing the client to adjust the bass level on the fly. We 3D-printed a custom pod for the remote, positioning it within easy reach of the driver.
Baja Designs Lighting
While the Bronco was in our shop, the client also requested a lighting upgrade. We installed three sets of Baja Designs LED pod lights in the front bumper. These included white and amber S2-Series SAE driving lights and XL80 combo fog/driving lights.
For a seamless integration, we utilized the Baja Designs trim kit designed specifically for the Bronco bumper. The truck’s overhead console upfitter switches were wired to control all the lights, maintaining a clean and organized interior.
