A client from Baltimore recently contacted Westminster Speed and Sound to discuss upgrading his 2013 Ford F-350 audio system. We met with the client to understand what he liked about the existing audio system and what aspects he wanted to improve. Next, we invited the client to listen to several products in our showroom as we designed a solution that would deliver the sound he wanted.
Ford F-350 Audio System Amplifier
We decided to keep the factory-installed radio in the vehicle and use a PAC interface to extract an audio signal that we could connect to a Hertz HDP5 five-channel amplifier. After removing the factory-installed plastic subwoofer enclosure, we mounted the amplifier on the floor of the truck behind the rear passenger seat.
Super Duty Truck Speaker Upgrades
The client chose a set of JL Audio C5-650 6.5-inch components for the front of the F-350 and Audison APX570 5×7-inch coaxial speakers for the rear. Our fabrication team created a set of mounting adapters for the woofer of the C5 speaker set, then treated the inner and outer door skins with a layer of Hushmat sound deadening material. The tweeters are mounted in the factory location in the sail panel at the forward edge of the door.
JL Audio Stealthbox Subwoofer System
We installed a JL Audio SB-F-SUPRCC/13TW5v2/BK Stealthbox under the rear passenger seat of the truck. This enclosure is constructed from fiberglass at JL’s facility in Miramar, Florida, and fits 2004 through 2016 Ford Super Duty Crew Cab vehicles. The enclosure is home to a single 13.5-inch 12TW5v2-2 subwoofer.
Bushwacker Fender Flares
The client asked us to provide and install a set of Bushwacker pocket style fender flares on the truck to provide better protection from stones and gravel thrown up by the large Nitto Terra Grappler tires. These flares arrived already painted in White Platinum to match the truck and provide an additional two inches of tire coverage.
Ford Truck Audio System Project
With the Ford F-350 audio equipment installed, the last step was to configure the amp to work with the audio interface and the chosen speakers. Our team set the crossovers and sensitivity adjustments on the amp to make sure that any music the client chose would sound great.
The client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound to have a listen to the new system. He loved the way it sounds and was impressed with the clarity of the speakers and low-frequency output of the subwoofer system.
