A client from Glenwood recently contacted Westminster Speed and Sound to discuss a 2018 Jeep Wrangler technology and audio system project. The client has known about our shop for several decades. With the performance and styling upgrades complete on his Jeep, he was excited to enlist our services to upgrade the meager entertainment system that came with the vehicle. After a thorough consultation, we designed a sound system that included the infotainment features the client wanted for his rugged off-roader.
Alpine Restyle Source Unit Upgrade
The client wanted the latest in navigation and smartphone connectivity for his Jeep. We showed him the Alpine i209-WRA Restyle upgrade for the Jeep. He immediately fell in love with the massive 9-inch screen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity solutions. We added a USB extension to the radio and mounted it on the center console to make connecting his smartphone easy.
We installed an Alpine HCE-TCAM1-WRA Jeep Wrangler backup camera system on the spare tire to make parking and maneuvering the vehicle safer. The camera works perfectly with the 37-inch Goodyear tires and KMC Machete Wheels and includes a third brake light to ensure the Jeep is visible to other drivers.
System Amplifier and Power Upgrades
Because the client has a large winch and upgraded lighting on the truck, we prefaced the amplifier installation by installing a dual battery kit and a pair of Optima yellow-top batteries under the hood. This upgrade gives him the current required to power the accessories as well as the pair of JL Audio HD-Series amps we would be installing.
An HD600/4 provides the front and rear speakers with up to 150 watts of power each and an HD750/1 delivers 375 watts to each of the two subwoofer enclosures. We mounted the amps under the floor in the cargo area of the Jeep.
JL Audio Speakers and Subwoofers
The client chose JL Audio ZR650-CSi 6.5-inch components for the front speaker locations in the Jeep. We mounted the woofers in the stock enclosures on either side of the dash and the tweeters on a set of brackets in the dash speaker location. The client chose JL C5-650 speakers for the overhead sound bar. Our fabrication team created a set of mounting plates for the tweeters to let them work in place of the factory midrange speaker.
For sub-bass, the client loved the idea of the JL Audio Stealthbox solutions for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. We installed an SB-J-WRUD/10TW1/BK on the driver side and an SB-J-WRUP/10TW1/BK on the passenger side rear tire well. Each enclosure is home to a shallow-mount 10TW1 10-inch subwoofer.
Jeep Wrangler Technology and Audio Project
With the equipment installed and configured, it was time for the client to return to Westminster Speed and Sound to experience his Jeep Wrangler technology and audio system upgrade for the first time. He loved the way the Alpine source unit updated the vehicle interior. The sound system offered the exact clarity, detail and output capabilities he wanted.
