A client from over in Halethorpe recently contacted the Westminster Speed and Sound team while researching audio system upgrades for his 2011 Harley-Davidson Tri Glide trike. As is typical with most Harley touring bike and trike owners, he felt that the factory-installed stereo didn’t play loudly enough. The client wanted a sound system that could drown out the wind and exhaust noise while on the highway. We knew just what he needed.
Harley Trike Radio Upgrade
We started the project by installing an Aquatic AV MP-5UBT-HS digital media receiver in the fairing. This single-DIN radio is designed specifically for 1998 through 2013 Harley bikes. The new radio includes a 3-inch color LCD screen and large rotary volume control. There’s also a USB connection that we extended to a port that’s mounted on the fairing to let the owner connect a USB memory stick to play MP3 files. The radio also includes Bluetooth audio streaming so the client can play Pandora, Spotify or iHeartRadio from his phone while riding. We integrated the radio with the radio control buttons on the handlebars so that the client can make adjustments without taking his eyes off the road or hand off the grips.
Rockford Fosgate Motorcycle Audio
Next, our technicians mounted a set of 6.5-inch Rockford Fosgate TMS65 speakers in the OE locations in the fairing and matching TMS5 5.25-inch speakers in the Tour Pak locations on either side of the rear seat. These speakers are designed specifically for powersports applications and include a high-efficiency tweeter and a neodymium motor on the woofer to deliver fantastic output. The speakers are Element-Ready, as Rockford describes them, which means they can get dusty, dirty and wet without any fear of them being damaged.
We connected the preamp output of the new radio to a four-channel Rockford Fosgate TM400X4ad amplifier. We used Rockford’s RFK-HD9813 mounting kit and wiring harness to install the amp just above the radio and allow it to connect to the battery and OE speaker wire plugs. We didn’t have to modify any of the wiring on the bike to complete the installation. The amp can produce up to 100 watts of power to each speaker to ensure that each speaker sounds amazing, even when the volume is cranked up.
Maryland’s Motorcycle Audio Upgrade Experts
With the sensitivity and crossover on the amp configured and the trike reassembled, it was time for the client to return to Westminster Speed and Sound to pick up his Tri Glide. He was amazed at the audio system’s clarity and output capabilities and loved how we had integrated everything.
