A client from Hanover, Pennsylvania, came to Westminster Speed and Sound looking to upgrade the motorcycle audio system on his 2017 Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited Low. A member of our team spent time looking over the bike with the client to see how it was equipped. In typical fashion, what we found was that the stereo system couldn’t be heard while at speed and the sound quality was tinny and anemic. At that point, we came back inside and explored solutions that we thought would fit his needs best. In the end, a proposal was created that he liked, so time was set to begin work on the Harley.
Reflashing the Radio is Critical for the Best Sound
Our team began by reflashing the factory Harley radio. This is a critical step on the 2014 and up models as the factory puts an equalization curve into the system, designed to eliminate the low-end bass and emphasize the mid bass frequencies. They do it to protect their speakers from blowing, but quite simply, it sounds horrible. So, we have a programmer that allows us to eliminate that factory EQ curve, giving the bike a much better musical signal for us to build a system.
ARC Moto602 Speakers Are a Huge Improvement Up Front
When it came time to choose front speakers, we went with a set of ARC Audio Moto602 models. Quite simply, these are some of the finest speakers you can put on a motorcycle. They were designed from the ground up for use in a Harley-Davidson. From their waterproof design and their acoustic properties to their incredible output potential, everything about them works great on a bike.
JL Audio C2-650X Speakers Round Out the Tour-Pak
For the rear of the bike we chose a set of JL Audio C2-650X speakers. The Tour-Pak has very limited depth so these models fit in there with a ½-inch spacer. As you can see in the final pictures, they look right at home. And when you compare the motor structure of the JL models to the factory ones, you can instantly see the quality improvement.
ARC Audio Moto600.4 Brings the Sound Alive
At this point it was time to choose an amplifier to power the audio system. Our staff went back to ARC Audio, choosing their motorcycle-specific Moto600.4 model. It provides over 600 watts of clean power to the four speakers. Now, many companies claim lots and lots of power, but in reality, most of them fall short. And when you add in the radio reception issue that many of these small motorcycle-specific amps create, the ARC is an instant winner. Couple that with the most efficient design on the market and you end up with an amplifier that will work with your stock charging system and provide years of reliable use.

Choose an Audio Specialist for the Best Results
Probably the biggest issue we see here at Westminster Speed and Sound are shops installing motorcycle audio equipment that should stick to doing repair work and performance upgrades. We see shoddy wiring, dangerous connections and overall poor workmanship. The end result is a system that doesn’t sound anywhere as good as it should, and breakage is common. If you have personally experienced this issue with your bike, call us as we may be able to help.
We Never Get Tired of the Expression on a Client’s Face
One of our favorite parts of doing motorcycle audio is doing the final demo for the client when they come to pick up the bike. We turn on the system and they instantly like the sound. And then we turn it up, and then up more, and then get it really jamming … and we watch for the expression on their face. Our team has experienced everything from a huge smile, to a handshake, a high five and even words we aren’t going to type here … lol. To put it bluntly, seeing our clients love the work we do is what makes it all worthwhile.
