A repeat client from Union Bridge came to Westminster Speed and Sound looking for a 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide audio system upgrade. He had the dealer install the Boom 1 system and was contemplating the Boom 2 upgrade, but figured he should see us first. After looking over his bike and talking to him, it was evident we could design and install a solution that would go way beyond any factory upgrades. One of our team worked up a proposal that he liked, so we set a time to begin working on the bike.
Arc Audio Moto 600.4 is the Harley-Davidson Street Glide Audio Foundation
An amplifier is the foundation of any good motorcycle audio upgrade, and Arc Audio has a history of building great products for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Their Moto600.4 is a bike-specific model packing a whopping 600 watts of power in an extremely compact design. We have used this amplifier in many of our builds and it has never let us down. The small footprint allows it to be mounted in the fairing near the radio and the advanced power supply gives it plenty of power while still working with the limited capabilities of a Harley charging system.
Hertz Speakers Offer Tremendous Clarity and Output
When it came time to select front speakers, we chose the Hertz HCX165.4, which is a 6.5” coaxial model that mounts the tweeter in the center of the woofer. These speakers offer incredible output coupled with musical detail that makes you want to leave it cranked up for hours on end. We modified the factory Harley speaker enclosure to hold the new speakers and designed it in such a way that the factory grille could be reused, giving it a clean, modern look.
JL Audio C3-570 Speakers Bring Up the Rear
At this point, it was time to select rear speakers for the build. We wanted the finest 5×7” speakers on the market, so JL Audio C3-570 was the logical choice. These speakers are designed to work in a component or coaxial configuration and, in this instance, the coax method was perfect. We hid the outboard crossover networks neatly off to the side of each bag, keeping all the storage capability intact. The JL speakers use a noticeably larger motor structure than the factory Harley speakers so the inside of the bag lid has to be modified to handle the deeper speaker. As you can see in the finished pictures, they looked great.
An Installation Designed to Last
A motorcycle is a completely different beast from an automobile, so the installation has to be different as well. Extreme measures have to be taken so the equipment and installation will be reliable for years and years. We solder all our connections and apply protective heat shrink. Our wiring is neatly loomed and secured to allow for easy serviceability in the future. In short, you have enough to worry about when riding your bike, so the audio system should be the least of your concerns. Our design and build will let you enjoy your music and focus on what’s important: the road ahead.
