A repeat client stopped by Westminster Speed & Sound, interested in upgrading the audio system in his 2020 Ford F-150. After looking over the truck with him, our staff realized that it had the B&O premium audio system. While that is an improvement over the base audio, it still leaves a lot to be desired in clarity, output and bass. After sitting in the vehicle with the client and talking about his likes and dislikes, we decided to begin by adding some quality bass to the system.
We took the client into our sound room so he could listen to some different products and talk through available solutions. He settled on a JL Audio 94462 Stealthbox. It combines JL Audio’s 13.5″ patented subwoofer in a carpeted finish to match a fiberglass enclosure. As you can see in the pictures, it gets bolted to the floor under the larger section of the folding rear seat.
When it came time to choose power, we went to Helix and used their M1 600 watt amplifier. We used a Kicker KEYLOC interface to integrate the amp to the output side of the B&O amplifier already in the truck. The kicker piece is unique in that it has an integrated digital signal processor that modifies the musical signal to remove much of the “added” stuff that B&O puts into the music. The end result is a better-quality signal from which to build an upgraded audio system. We also mounted a bass level controller into a convenient spot up front in easy reach of the driver.
This truck now has real, authoritative bass that you can feel as well as hear, making the sound a lot more enjoyable.
