A repeat client from Westminster, Maryland, came to WSS Westminster Speed & Sound with his brand-new 2015 Grand Cherokee, looking for a custom installed-radar detector. We have done several of these systems for this customer, dating back well over 10 years. We knew right from the beginning of the conversation that he was going to want our top-of-the-line system, so we suggested the Escort 9500ci with the optional rear laser shifters. He liked our idea, so we set an installation time.
Conveniently Mounted Controller And Display for Radar and Laser Protection Install
Our team had previously done a similar Grand Cherokee with this customer, so we knew where he wanted the display and where the controller should be mounted. If we had not done one of these vehicles for the customer before, we would have spent significant time on determining the best locations for these items.
In this generation Grand Cherokee, there is a great spot to install the display and controller – right in front of the shifter. It allows for adjustments to be made easily and on the fly, and a quick glance lets the client see what is going on. Since this cubbyhole has a door that can be closed, the radar system can easily be completely hidden from view.
It is the opinion of WSS Westminster Speed & Sound that where corners are often cut on a custom-installed radar detector is the installation of the sensors. We will never cut corners on an installation, because doing so will affect the performance of the system. We feel that our customers should get all of the performance they pay for, so sometimes our installation may be more expensive than that of another shop. This is the only way we know how to do things.
Hidden Front Radar Sensor For A Clean Look
In this customer’s Jeep, we were able to place the radar sensor behind the grill, hidden from view. As radar passes right through plastic, the grill area is a great spot for the radar unit. We spent significant time on making sure the radar sensor was installed in its optimum position and securely mounted.
Laser Shifters Offer Ultimate Laser Protection
Where the magic happens in the Escort 9500ci system is the laser shifters. Portable detectors that come with laser detection are pretty useless when it comes to avoiding a ticket. You see, laser is very different from radar, in that it shoots a very narrow beam of light – around 3 feet wide at a few hundred yards. What that means to you is that your detector is only going to go off if you are the person getting hit, and then it is too late to avoid that ticket. Our custom-installed systems use laser shifters. When they sense laser being shot at them, they immediately fire back beams of light back at the laser gun, which prevents it from getting a reading on your vehicle. You now have time to adjust your speed and avoid a costly ticket. While you will be shot in the front of your vehicle by laser most of the time, we suggest adding rear laser shifters for the ultimate in protection.
Where this gets complicated is in the details of the installation on the laser shifters. You see, light is not like radar. It is only line of sight and will not travel through things. That means the laser shifters have to be in the direct line of sight of the laser gun, or they become ineffective. The shifters themselves also have a narrow window in which they optimally perform, so their placement in relation to the center of the vehicle is paramount. Most laser gun operators are taught to aim at the license plate, since it is in the center of the vehicle, and the metal is a good reflector for their signal. If you look at the pictures, you will see that we chose spots in the front and rear that are centrally located, for maximum effectiveness.
Another Satisfied Repeat Client
When the client came to pick up his Jeep, he was very pleased with the installation. He mentioned that we would be doing another vehicle for him in the near future.
