This spring the Lineboro Maryland Fire Department came to us looking for a navigation system and multiple backup cameras for a new ambulance they were ordering. I recognized the fireman that came to see us as we had outfitted two ambulances in a former firehouse for him. He told the other folks in the fire department about how helpful this technology was and they decided that they had to have it.
Ambulance Navigation System Offers Flexibility
The vehicle was a 2012 Ram 5500 that was outfitted as an ambulance. We installed a Kenwood DNX690HD navigation unit for two reasons:
- It used a Garmin navigation software that many of the firefighters were familiar.
- It allowed you to enter an address while moving which is a great time saver. The driver heads out in the direction of the call while the copilot enters the address. We all know that in emergencies seconds count.
Cameras Serve Several Purposes In This Ambulance
We then installed was a pair of high quality, low light, commercial grade cameras. The first camera was at the rear of the vehicle to aid in backing up. The second camera was inside of the patient area and allowed the people in the front of the ambulance to know what was happening with the patient. This allows them to make split second decisions based on what is happening. We designed the cameras so that the driver could see any camera at any time. We also set the cameras up with a priority trigger system so that the backup camera would always take precedence when the vehicle is put into reverse. When the crew picked up the vehicle they were very pleased with the product and the quality of the installation. They felt it would allow them to do their job better. And isn’t that what technology is supposed to do for us?
