On October 1st of 2013, the state legislature passed an addendum to the current Maryland cell phone law. Here is a link to the actual law:
Let’s break it down and make it as simply as possible. If you, as the driver, are caught even holding a cell phone while in your vehicle, you are breaking the law. This includes while sitting at a stoplight. The only exception is when the vehicle is in park or dialing 911 or emergency services. You can be written a ticket just for grabbing your mobile phone to dial a number, even if you set it back down after dialing.
The Maryland cell phone law is now enforced as a primary offense. This means that you can be pulled over and written a ticket for only this reason. You may be fined up to $75 on your 1st offense and can have your license suspended for up to 90 days. In simple terms, they are not playing around.
