A new client from Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, came to WSS Westminster Speed & Sound looking for a custom-installed laser and radar detector. He was driving a beautiful, brand-spanking-new 2015 Ford Mustang GT convertible. It was a silver-on-black car and, when combined with the window tint and black wheels, it was a real head-turner. He explained that he was looking for a great quality custom detector. After seeing our build post about a Porsche Boxster S and looking at our website, he knew we were the place he needed to go. Needless to say, we were flattered and humbled by his comments. As the conversation progressed, the client told us about work he has had done over the years, and that he has always been looking for a shop he could truly trust to work on his vehicles.
Discussion With The Client Led Us To Choose The K40 System
One of our team went out to his vehicle with him and looked it over extensively, going over ideas for where sensors and system indicator lights could be installed. We sell multiple brands of custom-installed laser and radar systems and he expressed his desire to have the best-performing system available. That led us to the K40 RL360i system, with front and rear radar sensors, along with their G5 front and rear laser defusers. It offers 360-degree protection in a product designed from the ground up to be a custom-installed product. The client liked our idea, so we set an installation appointment.
We Use The Best Practices For Custom Installed Laser and Radar Detector Installation
In our opinion, the installation of custom-installed systems is even more important than the product itself. We have seen so many installs where corners were cut to offer a lower price, often resulting in failure over time. That will never happen at WSS Westminster Speed & Sound. Our pledge to you is extracting the maximum performance out of your system while making the installation as cosmetically pleasing as possible. We also pledge to give you an installation designed to last for the life of your vehicle, so we solder and heat-shrink all of our connections and we securely mount all sensors to body structures, not tape them into a convenient spot.
Hidden Front Radar Receiver
In the front of the Mustang, we were able to hide the front radar receiver underneath the radiator cover, securely mounted to metal in the vehicle. You can see in the pictures where the front radar receiver is mounted. With the panel back on, the sensor is completely hidden, giving it a stealth look.
(Joey, please use a pic showing the sensor exposed and one hidden)
K40 G5 Front Laser Defusers
When it came time for front laser defusers, we used two of K40’s G5 units, strategically placed in the lower grille opening of the bumper. You can only see the sensors if you peek down low, yet they have an unobstructed view of the road ahead, giving them maximum effectiveness. Again, we mounted the sensors securely to the body for longevity and performance.
Defusers, Ultimate Laser Protection
It should be noted that K40 makes laser defusers, not laser sensors, and there is a big difference between the two types of sensors. All portable radar detectors and some custom-installed detectors use laser sensors. To be honest, these are a waste of time and money. You see, laser works very differently from radar. When you are approaching a speed trap that uses radar, your system detects the person in front or behind you being shot with radar, giving you time to slow down and avoid a ticket. Laser is a precise beam of light shot directly at the vehicle in question. It has a beam pattern of 3 feet or less at a few hundred yards. What that means to you is your laser detector can’t pick up laser being shot at someone else. It only picks up laser that is shot at you, and then it is too late.
Now, let’s talk about laser defusers. While it is true that they sense laser being shot at you, here is the difference. When they sense a laser signal, they immediately fire back powerful beams of infrared light at a pulse rate the gun can’t understand. What this means to you is they don’t get a reading. You now have time to slow down and avoid a costly ticket. This is really the only good defense against laser currently available.
Rear Radar Receiver, A K40 Advantage
In the rear of the client’s vehicle, we added another radar receiver. This is one of the things that separates K40 from most of their competition. This system can tell you where the signal is coming from, making you a much smarter driver and helping you avoid a ticket. Our team placed the radar receiver behind the rear bumper in a spot where it could be securely mounted, yet not have any metal that would interfere with its performance.
Rear Laser Defuser Rounds Out The Laser Protection
For the ultimate in laser protection, we added a single G5 laser defuser at the bottom of the rear license plate in an elegant, unobtrusive license-plate frame mount.
Perfectly Integrated Visual Alerts
Since Mustangs have such beautiful interiors, we wanted to make sure our installation didn’t detract from anything. The RL360i uses front and rear system indicator lights, and we mounted them between the gauges, facing the driver. The left indicator is for anything related to the front of the vehicle, and the right indicator is for anything related to the rear of the vehicle. The position of the indicators makes for a quick visual alert for the client while giving keeping with the classy retro theme of the interior. The K40 also uses audible prompts for alerts and for changing settings, so we hid the speaker in such a way to allow for easy vehicle servicing, while keeping it completely hidden.
GPS Sensor Allows For Further Alert Customization
K40 systems come with GPS technology so you can mark certain locations that give false alerts and give you the option of disabling the system below certain speeds. This is very handy when driving in downtown areas. No one wants to see a black box on their dash, so we hid the receiver underneath the passenger side trim panel, right in the rear side window.
Wireless Remote For Quick Adjustments
We do all of the controls on the K40 via a wireless RF remote control. There is no need to aim it at a sensor, and all the buttons are large and easy to use. The client can keep it in his center console, within quick and easy reach.
Happy Client Reassured For Choosing WSS Westminster Speed And Sound
When we finish an installation, we go over the system, running diagnostics on it to ensure it is working properly. Once that is completed, and we’ve road-tested the vehicle, we deliver it to the client. When this client came to pick up his vehicle, he was thrilled with the installation. He marveled that it didn’t affect the beautiful body lines, and at the fit and finish of the work itself. He was confident in his choice of using us. Again, we were humbled by his kind words. After showing the client how to use the system, we sent him on his way, looking forward to the next round of business together.
