A client from Baltimore contacted the Westminster Speed and Sound team to improve the stereo system performance on his 2019 Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide. The motorcycle was equipped with the Boom 2 audio system that includes speakers in the fairing, front lower speaker pods and 5×7 speakers in the saddlebags. As is typical with these systems, it doesn’t play loudly enough to sound good. After the client auditioned several speaker options in our showroom, we put a plan together to upgrade the audio system so that it would deliver a sonic performance worthy of the CVO moniker.
Harley-Davidson CVO Stereo Upgrade
The first order of business was to replace all the speakers on this amazing motorcycle. We removed the four stock speakers and installed a set of ARC Audio Moto 602v2 6.5-inch coaxial drivers in the front fairing and a second set in the lower speaker pods on the engine guard. We added a set of Harley speaker grilles to the lowers to give them a neat and tidy appearance. The Moto 602v2 speakers feature a weather-resistant design that can also cope with prolonged UV exposure.
Next, we removed the 5×7 speakers from the saddlebag lids and installed a set of ARC Audio Moto692 speakers in their place using adapter brackets. These larger speakers offer increased efficiency, bass performance and power handling and are a great match to the two sets of speakers on the front of the bike.
High-Efficiency Motorcycle Amplifier
The next order of business was to provide the new speakers the power they deserve. We mounted an ARC Audio Moto 720 amp in the front fairing and wired it into the electrical system with a Rockford RFK-HD14 installation kit. Since Harley wires the lowers to the bag lids, we had to modify the way the front speakers were wired. We moved the lowers to the amp’s front channels to equalize both sets of Moto 602v2’s together using an ARC Audio PSM digital signal processor. The rear 6×9’s were given the same treatment to ensure that the bike sounded stunning.
The Moto 720 is a four-channel amplifier that can produce up to 150 watts to each of the rear speakers and 180 watts to the two front speaker sets. What sets this amp apart from its competitors is its efficiency. It converts more than 92% of the bike’s electrical system’s energy into power to make music. That’s 15% better than most other good amplifier designs.
The PSM tuning process involves placing our real-time audio analyzer microphone on the seat and using the eight-band EQ to smooth any peaks or dips in the response from each corner of the audio system. The result is a smooth and detailed sound that’s amazingly accurate and realistic. We dialed-in a little extra high-frequency boost so the system would sound great at freeway speeds.
