The owner of this 2022 Ford Bronco was looking for a shop to upgrade the audio system and add lighting to his vehicle. After reading on our website about our experience upgrading Broncos, he scheduled a phone consultation with our team to discuss options to improve the quality and performance of the stereo system in the vehicle. He was pleased with our proposal, so he arranged to travel from his home in New Jersey to have our team upgrade his vehicle. We helped the client find a nice hotel to stay at while our team completed the project.
Bronco Audio System Upgrade
The client wanted the audio system in his Bronco to play louder and sound clearer than what came from the factory. He also wanted better low-frequency performance. We designed a fully active audio system upgrade with an eight-channel DSP-equipped amplifier, four pairs of new speakers and a dedicated subwoofer system.
The project started with the installation of BLAM LFR52 2-inch midrange drivers and TS20HR ¾-inch tweeters on custom adapter plates in the dash of the Bronco. Next, we replaced the woofers in the kick panels with a set of Helix S6B drivers. Finally, we replaced the rear speakers with Helix 4-inch coaxial S4X speakers.
For bass, we installed a Stinger TXJWB12 subwoofer enclosure on the truck’s rear tailgate. This enclosure was designed for the Jeep Wrangler but worked perfectly in this vehicle.
Factory Radio Integration and System Amplification
The radio communicates with the factory-installed amplifier using a data network called A2B. We installed a mObridge DAG2-A2B interface to extract a clean, full-range audio signal from the radio. We connected the interface’s output to a Helix VEIGHTDSP amplifier with a TOSLINK fiber-optic cable. The amp has eight built-in channels of amplification that can provide up to 75 watts of power to each speaker.
The integrated digital signal processor has two additional preamp outputs that we used to feed a subwoofer signal to a Helix M ONE amplifier. Helix rates the M ONE as capable of delivering just over 400 watts of power to the 12-inch Phoenix Gold driver in the Stinger enclosure. We added a remote level control to the system so the client can adjust the subwoofer’s output quickly to suit the music he’s listening to.
System Tuning Delivers Amazing Realism
Once everything was installed, our team configured the signal routing and crossovers on the amplifier to feed the current range of signals to each of the system’s speakers. Next, we set the delays for each channel to align the arrival time for sound from each speaker and started adjusting the equalizer to ensure that the system delivers smooth and natural tonal balance. Finally, we always finish our DSP tuning by listening to several reference tracks so that everything functions as expected.
Ford Bronco Lighting Upgrade
The client also wanted to upgrade the lighting on his Bronco. After some research and discussion, he settled on a set of Rigid Industries 46731 Triple SR-M fog lights. The kit includes a pair of SAE-compliant fog lights, two spotlights and two driving lights, and a bracket that allows everything to be installed neatly in the Bronco’s front bumper. As per the client’s request, we wired the spot and driving lights to one of the upfitter switches in the overhead console and connected the SAE lights to a second switch.
