A Gwynn Oak client contacted our Westminster Speed and Sound team to ask about options for upgrading his Harley-Davidson Road Glide stereo. The client already had a set of custom lids for the saddlebags but needed speakers and an amplifier to make the system sound great. He had always wanted new speakers for the front fairing, too. We auditioned several options with him in our showroom, and he ultimately chose Cicada Audio speakers and amplification. With the system design completed and products selected, we scheduled an appointment to begin the installation.
Harley-Davidson Road Glide Stereo Upgrade
We started the project by carefully removing the front fairing so we could access the speakers. Our team installed a set of 6.5-inch Cicada Audio CM65.2 2-ohm mid-woofers in the stock enclosures and added matching RR075T tweeters to the dedicated CHDRGGT grilles. The grilles are designed as direct drop-in replacements, so everything looks tidy.
For rear speakers, the client decided on 8-inch Cicada Audio CM8.2 mid-woofers and a second set of RR075T tweeters for custom bag lids he’d already purchased. All the woofers in the system feature lightweight neodymium magnets to keep weight down. These drivers also feature 2-ohm voice coils, so the amplifier will produce more power than if the speaker had 4-ohm coils. These speakers are impressively efficient, so the system draws less current than if it had car-audio-style speakers. The result is a significantly reduced load on the electrical system.
Motorcycle Audio Amplifier with DSP
Of course, no motorcycle audio system would be fun without a powerful amplifier. The client chose a Cicada Audio DSP150.4D amplifier, a four-channel amp that provides more than 100 watts of power per channel. Crucially, the integrated digital signal processor allowed our team to adjust the system to deliver smooth, detailed frequency response, free from peaks or dips that would sound unnatural.
Our real-time audio analyzer enabled us to measure each speaker’s acoustic output at the listening position so we can adjust the EQ in the amplifier accurately and efficiently. We used our programmer to change the settings in the factory radio to eliminate the strange equalization curve so we could tune the system more easily.
Maryland’s Best Motorcycle Stereo Upgrades
The client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound the next day to check out the upgraded sound system. He loved how clear it sounded and that he could crank the volume without it distorting.
