A local client recently visited Westminster Speed and Sound to inquire about improving the performance of the stereo system in his 2020 Tesla Model 3. He was content with the overall output capabilities of the stock system but felt it lacked clarity and detail. We scheduled a diagnostic appointment to investigate the way the factory stereo works. Based on our findings, we suggested upgrading the speakers in the vehicle to deliver the performance he was seeking.
Tesla Model 3 Speaker Upgrade
The stock audio system in the Model 3 includes three midrange drivers across the dash and woofers in each of the doors. We planned to remove these speakers and install BLAM Signature Series drivers in their place. The BLAM speakers feature rigid carbon fiber cones and butyl rubber surrounds, and the midrange drivers have an integrated copper shorting ring that reduces distortion when the driver is pushed to higher excursion levels.
We started with the installation of three BLAM FRS 3N50+ 3-inch midrange drivers across the dash. Our team created mounting adapters out of expanded PVC plastic, which let the new speaker bolt to the vehicle using the OE drivers’ fastener locations. Next, we added a single TS 20 HR ¾-inch tweeter beside the midrange in the center of the dash. We also mounted another set of the same tweeters in place of the OE tweeters in the sail panels at the forward edge of the doors. The cloth-covered grille at the edge of the dash fits in place over the upgraded speakers for a completely original look.
To improve the bass response in the car, we made multilayer expanded PVC adapters to secure a WS 6.80 6.5-inch woofer in each door. The adapters space the speakers away from the door panel so that they are in close proximity to the grille.
By maintaining the original amplifier in the system, the integrated upmixer feeds mono information to the center speaker to help create a realistic listening experience from any seat in the car. The new speakers add significantly less distortion to the signal from the amp, so the music sounds more exact and much more detailed.

After most of a day’s work, we had the new BLAM speakers installed in this Model 3, and the car was back together. The client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound to pick up the vehicle. He loved the new speakers’ improvement and was thrilled that the car looked exactly like it did when he dropped it off.
