A client from Annapolis recently contacted the team at Westminster Speed and Sound about upgrading his 2019 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 with a radar detector and laser defense system. He also wanted us to wrap the front of the vehicle with paint protection film to ensure the car would continue to look pristine. After a conversation about where and how he drives, we designed a speeding ticket prevention solution around an Escort MAX Ci 360. Happy with our plan, the client scheduled an installation appointment.
Porsche 911 Radar Detector and Laser Defense System
The Escort MAX Ci 360 system includes dedicated front and rear radar receivers and four laser shifters. After removing the front and rear bumper covers and storing them on our carpeted rack, our team set to work mounting the radar antenna on the bumper supports. Radar signals will pass through the plastic bumper covers with almost no loss of range.
Our team mounted all four of the laser shifters on the front of the vehicle to offer as much protection as possible against police lidar guns. Two sensors are mounted in the lower center grille opening on either side of the license plate. We made brackets for the other two sensors in the outer grilles below the headlights. These grilles have motorized shutters that remain open any time the car is in Sport or Sport Plus modes or when the rear spoiler is activated. In short, if the vehicle is moving quickly, the outer laser shifters will be functional.
We mounted the display for the Escort system in the top left corner of the windshield so that it’s easily visible yet out of the driver’s line of sight. The control panel is just to the right of the steering wheel column cover.
Paint Protection Film Maintains Vehicle Value
With the radar detector installed, our team prepped the front of the 911 for the installation of 3M Scotchgard Pro paint protection film. We used our computer-controlled plotter to cut the film for the front bumper, the hood, front fenders and the fronts of the side-view mirrors. Scotchgard Pro is a transparent urethane film that absorbs impacts from stones, gravel and sand to maintain the vehicle’s appearance. The film also resists staining from tar, bug splatter and tree sap.
