A client from Reisterstown recently contacted Westminster Speed and Sound to ask about upgrading the radio in his 2008 Porsche 911 Carrera S. He wanted to add SiriusXM satellite radio and hands-free smartphone integration that would let him remain productive while driving. As this 911 is a convertible, we had a perfect plan to deliver a high-performance solution for the client. He loved our proposal and scheduled an installation appointment right away.
Sony Multimedia Upgrade for Porsche 911
The radio we suggested is the Sony XAV-AX7000 multimedia receiver. This source unit includes a 6.95-inch touchscreen display that offers impressive brightness and class-leading anti-glare performance. In a convertible like this, these are crucial to seeing the screen in bright sunlight.
In terms of features, the radio includes both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity. These technologies allow the client to make phone calls, send text messages or request navigation instructions using simple voice commands. Apple’s Siri and Android’s Google Assistant use their voice recognition technology to execute the commands. The client can even choose an audio streaming service like Spotify, iHeartRadio or Pandora by simply asking them to play.
We used a NAV-TV Bose integration module to allow the new Sony radio to communicate with the amplifier and speakers in the Porsche. The SXV300v1 SiriusXM tuner module is mounted in the dash, and our team has a mounting location for the antenna that offers excellent performance while keeping it out of sight.
Since the XAV-AX7000 has dual USB ports on the rear of the chassis, we integrated a dual-USB port into the center console in place of the factory-installed cigarette lighter socket. The client can connect his smartphone along with a USB memory stick to play digital audio files.
We finished the installation with a radio trim panel from Porsche to give the radio a factory-installed appearance.
Baltimore’s Porsche 911 Radio Experts
With the new radio and accessories installed in the 911, the client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound to pick up the vehicle. A team member demonstrated how to use the new receiver and helped him connect his phone to use the voice recognition features. He was thrilled with the look of the new radio in the dash and loved the new technology.
