A repeat client of Westminster Speed and Sound recently contacted our team to inquire about adding a radar detector and laser defense system to his new 2019 Ram 3500 pickup truck. We interviewed the client to qualify his driving habits, then inspected the truck to determine what hardware would be required to protect it against police laser and radar traps. We designed a solution that met the client’s needs and expectations, and presented him with a quote. He approved of our plan and scheduled an appointment to begin the integration process.
Ram 3500 Radar Detector Installation
We started the project by mounting the front radar antenna from an Escort iX Ci system in the lower grille of the Ram. The detector has a clear line of sight in this location and will provide the highest sensitivity possible to X-, K- and Ka-band radar signals.
Next, our team mounted a trio of Escort ShifterMax laser transceivers in the upper grille. We carefully aligned the sensors as per the manufacturer’s instructions to provide long-range performance. We bundled the wiring and routed it carefully through the engine compartment. All the wiring is securely attached to factory harnesses to keep it away from heat sources and ensure the system will be reliable.
Escort Radar System Controller and Display Installation
Inside the truck, our team started with installing the display for the iX Ci system. We made a small bracket that places the display in the top left corner of the windshield. This location doesn’t affect the client’s line of sight while driving, but remains in his peripheral vision so he can react to warnings quickly.
We mounted the controller for the radar and laser system to the dash, just below the center differential switches and to the right of the steering column. This location is easily accessible so the client can mark locations of false alarms or cancel the laser defense system transmission once he’s checked his speed.
