A client from Mount Airy came to Westminster Speed and Sound looking to have a custom-installed laser and radar detector in his 2016 Range Rover SVR. One of our team members spent time looking over the SUV with him and understanding his goals for the upgrade. After completing one of our radar consultations, a proposal was generated that he approved, so time was set to begin working on the vehicle.
K40 RL360i is the Basis for this Range Rover Radar Detector
In this vehicle, we chose the K40 RL360i system. It combines both a front and rear radar receiver that we strategically mounted behind the front and rear bumpers on this SVR. Since radar can permeate plastic but not metal, it is important to place the receiver in an inconspicuous spot that still allows for maximum performance. As you can see in the images, we were successful in that endeavor. It’s important to note that we are the only dealer in a large radius to be factory certified on the installation process by K40, and we take a lot of pride in the quality of our workmanship.
Three Laser Defusers Take Protection to the Next Level
For this project, we chose to use two laser defusers up front and a single one in the rear. Quite simply, laser protection is the single biggest advantage of a custom-installed system over a portable unit. When our defusers sense a laser signal, they immediately fire back powerful beams of light that don’t allow a laser gun to get a reading on your vehicle. On a portable unit, all you are going to get is confirmation that you are about to get a speeding ticket. The two front defusers were mounted in the lower grill in a discreet spot while still allowing for optimum protection. In the rear of the Range Rover, we chose a license plate frame that mounts a single defuser right above it.
Stealth Install in the Interior
The final step to the installation process is to pick a location for the radar indicators. As you can see in the pictures, we flushed the indicators into the top of the instrument cluster surround. Under normal conditions you can’t even tell they exist. In the event of front radar activation, the left indicator begins to flash, and when radar is detected from the rear, the right indicator starts flashing. Of course, a hidden speaker also announces the presence of radar and its type. A convenient RF-based remote control is used to change settings and fits easily inside the center console.
