A client from Reading, Pennsylvania, rode into Westminster Speed and Sound with his beautiful 2011 Harley-Davidson Street Glide. He was in search of a motorcycle audio upgrade as his current system didn’t meet his expectations. One of our team members looked over the bike with him and listened to the current setup. After understanding his goals for the upgrade, we worked up a proposal that he approved and set a time to begin work on the Harley.
Better Products Equal Better Sound
First and foremost, we removed the existing speakers in the fairing that had been made by a well-known “Harley” stereo vendor. Quite simply, they weren’t all they’re cracked up to be. To replace them, our team chose a set of Audiofrog GS62 coaxial speakers along with a set of adapters that allowed us to fit a 6.5-inch size into the fairing. The improvement in sound quality, clarity and output was immediately noticeable.
An Amplifier Makes the Music Come Alive
Any good motorcycle audio system really needs an amplifier to make the music come alive. When you are riding at speed, you need real power if you are going to hear AND enjoy the music. For this reason, we chose an Arc Audio KS125.2mini. It supplies 75 watts of clean power to each speaker, is easily powered by the stock Harley charging system and is very compact. Now the music not only sounds good, it also jams.
Aquatic AV AQ-MP-5UBT-HS Stereo Brings It All Together
The final piece of the puzzle was an upgraded radio. For this bike, we chose the Aquatic AV AQ-MP-5UBT-HS. It combines a radio and Bluetooth for wireless music streaming, along with a 3.5mm aux port and USB port hidden behind the removable faceplate. You can log into your SiriusXM account as well. This model fits perfectly in the fairing, integrates seamlessly with the handlebar audio controls and even uses the factory Harley radio plug. When you add in the waterproof design, you end up with a winner.
An Installation Worthy of a Harley-Davidson
It seems more often than not that when our staff works on a motorcycle, once we start disassembling the bike, what we see brings tears or anger or both. The quality of the workmanship is quite lousy, with bare connections, haphazardly mounted products and just poor overall quality. Some of these installations are truly a fire waiting to happen. But there is good news. The team at Westminster Speed and Sound utilizes reference standard methods for all of our installations, including connections that are soldered with protective heat shrink applied. All wiring is neatly loomed and securely fastened in order to make servicing the bike in the future an easy task. And most importantly, we fine-tune the system once the installation is complete. No bike leaves our shop until it has the WSS seal of approval on it.
A Happy Client Returns
Once the installation was finished, it was time to deliver the bike back to the client. As we cranked it up the first time, we just watched as he started grinning from ear to ear. And that made our day.
