Remote car starter technology is nothing new to the staff at Westminster Speed and Sound near Baltimore. We have been installing remote starters in vehicles since 1990 and are the experts in Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. Many of our clients don’t have any experience with remote starter technology, so let’s look at how it works.
How Vehicle Technology has Changed
It used to be that turning the key in the ignition sent current to the starter motor and ignition system. Fewer and fewer new vehicles use high-current connections in the steering column, opting instead for digital signals and commands that interact with the vehicle’s computer. Now, when you press the start button or turn the key, the computer controls the starting sequence. This lets automakers include complex anti-theft and safety protocols.
When we install a remote starter system in a new car, one of the key components is a custom-programmed computer module that duplicates the information sent from the key or start button. These commands tell the vehicle to start in the language it understands, just as if you were sitting in the driver’s seat.
Remote Car Starter Technology
When you start your vehicle remotely, it just as secure as when it isn’t running. The doors remain locked so that nobody can enter the vehicle. If someone were to break a window and get in, the remote starter system is programmed to shut down as soon as the brake pedal is touched.
All factory fail-safes remain fully functional. For example, the vehicle won’t start if the hood is open. This could be very dangerous if a mechanic or technician were working on your vehicle.
What About my Vehicle Warranty?
Many clients ask us if a remote starter will void their warranty. We can only speak for ourselves in answering this, as not everyone follows the same processes we do. Our remote starter installations are integrated into your vehicle in a way that will not void your warranty. We use special techniques to make electrical connections that preserve the integrity of the factory wiring. You can learn more about what can and can’t void your warranty on the Federal Trade Commission website.

Install Comfort with a Remote Starter
Perfect for both the summer and winter, a remote car starter will let your air conditioning or heater make your vehicle more comfortable. Ask us about adding heated seat and rear window defroster controls for even more comfort and convenience.
