A repeat client from Hanover, Pennsylvania, came to WSS Westminster Speed & Sound with his 2008 Porsche Cayman S, looking for a second round of upgrades. We had previously installed a Kenwood navigation system, integrated with his stock Bose stereo, giving him a technology upgrade along with Bluetooth and Smart Phone functionality.
Double Din Radio Installed Earlier Becomes The Foundation For This Upgrade
If you look closely at the pictures, you will see the custom-made, aluminum-trim panel that we dyed to match the factory Porsche dash. This time around, the client wanted to add a backup camera and SiriusXM radio. We had offered these in the beginning, but he declined them at the time. When we spoke on the phone this time, he told us how big the blind spot was on his Cayman S and that he realized how helpful a backup camera would be to him. He thought that now would be a good time to do the satellite radio as well. We agreed, and he made an appointment.
Hidden Satellite Antenna Retains Exterior Vehicle Aesthetics On This Porsche Cayman
Since we have worked on many Porsche vehicles over the years, we know they are unique. We also recognize the pride and joy that Porsche owners take in their vehicles, and that they want to keep the classy lines and beautiful interiors intact. When it came time to do the satellite tuner for this customer, we knew he wasn’t going to allow a black antenna on the outside of the vehicle. Our highly skilled technicians were able to install the antenna underneath the plastic windshield cowl, completely hidden from view. Since satellite signals will go right through plastic, it was also a prime location for getting a good signal. And, since we had previously installed a radio for him that had direct satellite tuner control, no external controller was needed. Everything is controlled directly through the navigation system.
Well Planned Aftermarket Backup Camera Installation Yields OEM Look
For a backup camera, things get a little trickier on a Cayman. The engine bay sits between the navigation system and the rear bumper, so routing the wiring through a hot engine bay is no easy task. We had to allow for easy servicing of the vehicle while keeping the wiring away from anything that might damage it. If you look closely at the rear bumper, you can see where we flushed the camera above the rear license plate in a manner that looks like Porsche put it there.
Quick Connect Terminal For Camera Wiring Allows Easy Vehicle Servicing
Another tricky matter is the rear bumper itself. You see, on a Cayman, the rear bumper often has to be removed for routine service – but we had just installed a camera there with wire that connects to the inside of the vehicle. We installed a quick-release connector for the camera wiring and placed it right beside the harness for the rear bumper. Any time the vehicle gets serviced and the bumper has to come off, it will easy for the technician to see our plug, disconnect it and go on with his business.
Second Round Of Upgrades Continues To Impress The Client
When the client came to pick up his vehicle, he loved the fit and finish of the installation. He was impressed with the quality of the image displayed by the backup camera, and we explained that we had chosen a camera that exceeded the quality of most car manufacturers’ systems. His final remark to us made our day. He said that, when he decided to get a navigation system installed, many people told him not to do it. When those people saw our finished product, they were blown away by the clean looks and the performance of the new equipment. He couldn’t wait to show them this next round of upgrades.
We love hearing that from our clients. If you own a Porsche and would like to upgrade the technology in your vehicle, we invite you to stop by WSS Westminster Speed & Sound. Let us show you why we are a multi-time winner of Mobile Electronics magazine Top 50 Retailers in the Nation award.
