A client from Dallastown contacted Westminster Speed and Sound to ask about upgrading the stereo system on his 2018 Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited. The owner told us the bike had the upgraded touchscreen radio, but the system didn’t sound very good or play loudly. We knew right away that this was a perfect opportunity for new speakers and an amplifier to bring the system to life.
Ultra Limited Stereo Speaker Upgrade
We started the project by removing the front speakers from the fairing and the rear speakers from the TourPak pods on either side of the rear seat. The client chose two sets of Precision Power HD14.652 6.5-inch motorcycle-specific speakers for the upgrade. These speakers bolt directly into the original locations without any modifications but can handle way more power and sound better than the original units. Because they’re designed for use outdoors, they have a secondary seal around the tweeter that eliminates the possibility of water getting inside.
Precision Power Motorcycle Amplifier
The client chose a Precision Power MAA4400 four-channel amplifier to power the new speakers. This compact amplifier fits neatly in the fairing just above the radio. This amplifier is rated to produce 150 watts to each of the speakers, so there will never be a problem with running out of power when the client wants things loud. We used a PPI HD14.AWK installation kit to mount the amp and connect it to the battery under the seat. The kit includes all the plugs, cables and connectors we needed to use the factory wiring for the new speakers.
Harley Radio Reflash Improves Sound Quality
The last step was to reflash the radio to remove some of the extensive equalization processing that can make new speakers and an amplifier sound terrible. Our TechnoResearch tuner makes configuration changes easy. Without this step, the huge boost in bass frequencies can damage new speakers. We always reflash Harley-Davidson radios when upgrading the audio system.
Maryland’s Best Motorcycle Stereo Upgrades
We finished the installation by configuring the settings on the amplifier to ensure that the system would play loudly while delivering excellent sound quality and longevity. Once we finished testing everything and securing the wiring, we reassembled the bike and invited the client to have a listen. He was absolutely thrilled with the difference the new speakers and amplifier made.
