A client from Taneytown brought his gorgeous Deep Impact Blue 2016 Mustang GT to Westminster Speed and Sound for a stereo system upgrade. As is typical with most factory-installed audio systems, the client wanted the system to play louder and sound clearer — and of course, he wanted more bass. After a quick inspection, we put together an audio upgrade package that would tick all the check boxes on his list.
Mustang Stereo Upgrade Improves Clarity
The first task was to upgrade the front speakers in the Mustang. The client chose a set of BLAM 165 RS 6.5-inch components. We applied a layer of sound damping material to the doors to reduce vibrations and help keep the interior quiet. Then we built a set of plastic mounting adapters that allow the new woofers from the BLAM set to mount using the original hardware. The tweeters from the system are installed in place of the stock drivers in the A-pillar locations.
JL Audio Amplifier and Subwoofer System
Next, we used a Wavtech Link D interface to convert the speaker output from the radio into a preamp signal that we could feed directly into a JL Audio XD700/5v2 five-channel system amplifier. The Link D is concealed under the center console, and the amplifier is located in the storage area under the floor of the trunk. The JL Audio amp is rated to produce 75 watts of power from each of its four main channels and up to 300 watts from the subwoofer channel.
We used the impressively flexible crossover to create a bandpass filter on channels 1 and 2 to drive the woofers in the doors, then configured a high-pass filter to channels 3 and 4 to power the tweeters. This gave us complete control over the ability to balance the front stage speakers for smooth response.
For bass, the client chose a JL Audio SB-F-MUSCPE/12TW3 Stealthbox. This fiberglass enclosure fits into the corner of the trunk and is home to a single 12TW3-4 12-inch subwoofer. We added an HD-RLC remote level control to the subwoofer channel of the amp to let the client fine-tune the bass level quickly and easily. The remote is flush-mounted in the overhead console, so it’s easily accessible.
