A client from Hanover, Pennsylvania, came to Westminster Speed & Sound looking to upgrade the audio system in his 2014 Hyundai Elantra. One of our team went out to his vehicle so they could sit in it together and listen to the stock stereo system. We asked him what he liked and what he didn’t like about the current stereo, and his goals for the upgrade. Then we spent time with him in our sound room, listening to equipment that we thought would be a good solution for him. He liked our ideas, so we scheduled an installation for him.
The factory Hyundai stereo system in the dash is a fine unit; what is lacking is sound quality and volume. We installed an AudioControl LC2i interface to allow the stock stereo to communicate with the JL Audio XD500/3v2 amplifier. His audio system now jumps from 80 watts of power to over 500 watts, so the system’s output is no longer a problem.
In the front doors, we installed a set of Audison APK165 6.5″ component speakers in the factory locations and used a set of our FAST rings to improve midbass response. We installed a JL Audio 12W0 ported enclosure in the trunk to give the client some serious bass performance. We flushed a bass-level control knob into a convenient location, giving the client easy control over the amount of bass in his music.
When the client came to pick up his vehicle, he was thrilled with his new audio system. He now had all the volume he wanted along with dramatically improved realism in his music from the new front speakers. When the bass line in the music started, he was grinning ear to ear at the solid, accurate bass now present in his music.
