The Subaru Impreza WRX… It’s a great combination of good looks, good power, good handling, and a reliable car to boot. Over the years we have worked on so many WRX’s we’ve completely lost count. There is just so much you can do with the car that makes them even MORE fun to drive than they already are! From mild to wild, we have completed many projects for Subaru enthusiasts. The owner of a 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX wagon came to us from Gaithersburg, MD with a slightly different request… He wanted to make his car noticeably quieter on the inside. He knew we offered many products for sound damping to make our stereos sound better, so why not use them ALL OVER the car to keep the outside noise out? We went straight to work!
Stealth Roadkill Blocks Low Frequency Noise
We completely disassembled the inside of the car and chose a few different sound damping materials to complete this task. First, we installed Stinger Stealth Roadkill on the floor boards, up the inside firewall as far as we could, under the seats, in the spare tire well, and on the door panels. The Stealth Roadkill is a damping material designed to reduce vibrations inside a car, but it also blocks low frequency noise from entering the vehicle. Covering every square inch we could, this gave us a solid starting point. Even if we stopped here it would have made a noticeable difference in the loudness of this ride. The Stealth Roadkill is a great product.
Closed Cell Foam Product Absorbs High Frequencies
Now that we cut down on the low frequency noise, it was time to move on to higher frequencies. Not a problem! Stinger also makes closed-cell foam damping pad as well as carpet pads. First, we installed the foam padding in all four doors. The closed-cell foam absorbs higher frequencies and resonances, making it a great addition to the Stealth Roadkill we already installed. After we reinstalled the door panels they sounded solid as a rock when you shut them! Not only will this help achieve the client’s goal of making his ride quieter, but the car is 10 years old… It had many rattles that were eliminated at the same time!
Carpet Pad Eliminates The “Drone”
The Stinger carpet pad was the finishing touch. We installed the padding from the front firewall all the way back to underneath the rear seats. This final layer of sound damping material would help eliminate road noise and the sound of the motor and transmission from entering the vehicle. It’s almost a shame… The motor in a Subaru Impreza WRX sounds so good! But driving as much as this client does, we totally understand wanting to reduce the “drone” of the exhaust, the noisy highway, and any other unwanted sounds that would interfere with being able to unwind and relax on his commute home after a long day at work.
Sound Damping Transforms 10 Year Old Subaru
At the end of the day, we had made a transformation in a 10-year-old vehicle… It came in with a ton of road noise and very VERY little factory materials in the vehicle to keep it quiet. It left sounding like a brand new car with active sound cancellation technology! It was impressive how much of a difference these products made in this quiet ride. Sound damping materials like this can be installed in any vehicle! It’s a great idea for any Subaru WRX, but no matter what you drive we can show you solutions like this to make your ride quieter. Our staff is fully educated in this department, and we are always happy to give you some ideas. Bring your vehicle by and let us take a look at it! We can give you a written estimate on the spot for what it would take to complete a project like this one. Every client is different, so we will take pride in preparing a solution that is custom-tailored to your requests and your budget. Give us a call or Contact Us for more information!
