A client from Hanover recently visited the team here at Westminster Speed and Sound to ask about upgrading the sound system in his 2021 Jeep Wrangler. He wasn’t impressed with the way the factory system performed. So after talking with the client, we proposed a two-stage upgrade that would deliver the performance he wanted. The first step would be to add a high-performance subwoofer to the little off-roader.
Jeep-Specific Subwoofer Upgrade
To maximize the available cargo space in the Jeep, we suggested the Stinger enclosure. This Jeep-specific enclosure attaches to the rear tailgate and features a single 400-watt 12-inch subwoofer in a sealed design. The enclosure is built from 11-layer high-density plywood and is finished in RoadKill Armor Coating to make it completely weather-resistant. The TXJWB12 is compatible with two- and four-door JK and JL Wranglers from 2007 and newer.
To power the subwoofer, our team installed a JBL Club A600 amplifier under the driver’s seat. This amplifier can produce up to 600 watts of power into the 2-ohm subwoofer, leaving lots of room for dynamics and transients. In addition, we mounted the remote level control included with the amplifier in the front of the vehicle so that the client can fine-tune the subwoofer system based on the music he’s chosen.
Premium Audio Factory Radio Integration
To extract a clean signal from the source unit, we used a Kicker KEYLOC Smart Line-Output Converter. Unlike conventional interfaces, the KEYLOC analyzes the frequency and phase response of the signal from the radio and includes digital signal processing to create a signal that’s free of equalization to ensure that the subwoofer sounds its best. We mounted the KEYLOC on the same panel as the amplifier under the passenger seat.
Maryland’s Best Car Audio Upgrades
With the subwoofer system installed, our team set the crossover on the amplifier to blend the output into the main speakers and ensure that everything sounds fantastic. The client returned to Westminster Speed and Sound and immediately hopped in for a listen. He loved the way it sounded and was thrilled with how little space it took up.
