A client from Taneytown came to Westminster Speed and Sound with his 2016 Ford F-150, looking for a truck bed cover. Our team looked over the vehicle to see how it was equipped and spent time on understanding how the client was going to use the truck on a weekly basis. While we were talking, the subject of radar detectors came up. Once the client knew he could have one built into his truck, he decided to add one of them to the package. At the end of our discussion, we worked up a proposal that he liked, so we arranged a time to begin working on the truck.
F-150 Bed Cover Fits the Image Perfectly
From the instant we first saw this truck, we knew it was something special. The client had just gotten the truck back from a restyler that had blacked out every single thing on the truck. Nothing shiny, but the paint was left alone. For this reason, we suggested the Retrax Pro MX retractable bed cover. It uses a matte finish on the panel, fitting perfectly with the theme of the F-150.
If you have never used a rolling bed cover, you are in for a treat. You simply pop open the handle at the rear of the truck on the driver’s side, and by pulling the handle toward the cab, you are effectively rolling the cover into the small canister at the front of the bed. You can lock it into any position by closing the handle, so it can be in an infinite number of positions between fully open and fully closed. It does a great job of keeping your cargo secure and protected from the weather.
K40 Laser and Radar Protection
The next step in the upgrades was a custom-installed K40 RL200i laser and radar detector. It offers the driver protection from traditional radar wave-based speed traps as well as the newer laser- or LIDAR-based speed traps. It is a completely stealth system that Westminster Speed and Sound can install strategically in any vehicle.
In this F-150, we placed the radar receiver behind a plastic panel in the front of the vehicle, making it completely hidden from view while providing great reception.
Laser Defusers Make the Difference
We mounted a single G5 laser defuser on the front license plate and hid it in a black frame. Of important note here is the word “defuser” instead of laser receiver. Portable radar detectors use laser receivers, which are useless at preventing tickets if the authorities are using laser-based radar – since laser is a beam of light and not a radio wave, a receiver can only detect laser if the vehicle is shot with it, and then it is too late. A laser defuser takes protection to the next level. When it sees laser being shot at the vehicle, it immediately fires back powerful beams of light that the laser gun doesn’t understand, so it can’t get a reading on you. The driver now has precious seconds to slow down and avoid a costly ticket.
Interior Alerts are Also Mounted Strategically
Inside the vehicle, you want an way of knowing a speed threat exists that is easy to see, yet invisible. For this reason, our team flushed the indicator light into the top of the steering column shroud. When not in use, it becomes practically invisible. For secondary notification, we hid an audible speaker in a location that allowed the driver to hear it easily while keeping it out of sight. An RF-based remote control allows for easy changes to any of the settings and sits in a convenient spot in the center console.
The Client Loved the Finished Work
When the client came to pick up his truck, we couldn’t wait to show him how great everything looked. As we walked him around the vehicle, he loved our attention to detail. We then sat in the truck with him and went over operation of the radar detector system together.
