A client from Ellicott City recently asked the team here at Westminster Speed and Sound about upgrading the stereo system and communication technology in his 2013 Porsche Boxster. The car came with a basic four-speaker audio system and didn’t include any smartphone integration options. We showed the client an excellent speaker upgrade option, explained the benefit of adding a high-performance amplifier and demonstrated a few radio upgrade options. Based on his preferences, we put together an upgrade package that would deliver the features and performance he wanted.
Porsche Boxster Stereo Upgrade
We started the project by removing the factory radio and speakers from the Boxster. Our technicians applied a layer of sound deadening to the inner door skins. Next, they installed SoundShield deadening on the door trim panels for the utmost in sound isolation. We fabricated a set of speaker mounting adapters that would let us install a pair of 8-inch BLAM 200RS woofers in the stock door speaker location. The larger woofers offer increased bass output over the little 6.5-inch speakers that were initially in the car. The tweeters from the BLAM set are mounted in the stock locations in the corners of the dash. We used metal brackets to ensure they would stay in place.
Porsche Infotainment Upgrade
Next, our team turned its attention to the center console. The client chose a Sony XAV-AX7000 multimedia receiver to be the heart of this audio system. This radio includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. What makes it perfect for this Porsche is its bright display. Sony put extra effort into designing a screen that can be seen when the convertible roof is down. We mounted the radio using a genuine Porsche dash panel for an OEM look. The twin USB ports on the back of the radio are accessible using an adapter mounted in place of the factory power port in the center console.
We added a NAV-TV backup camera just above the rear license plate to make parking and maneuvering the car safer. The image from this waterproof camera displays automatically on the new radio as soon as reverse gear is selected.
DSP-Equipped Amplifier for Amazing Sound
The icing on the cake for this audio system upgrade is a Match M 5DSP MK2 amplifier that includes digital signal processing. This amp can produce up to 60 watts of power to each of the woofers and tweeters in the front of the vehicle. Our technicians used the built-in equalizer to balance the frequency response of each speaker in the vehicle and then set the output levels and signal delays to produce a stunningly realistic soundstage across the dash of the car. The result is akin to sitting at the console of a world-class recording studio. Instruments and voices emanate from a virtual stage that spans the width of the dash, with each performer positioned accurately within that space.
